President Hotel Mito
Ranked #6 of 40 Hotels / Ryokan in Mito
Reviewed 1 November 2009

I enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn in Mito. The staff is excellent and the rooms and price are fair value. However, the internet was devastatingly slow... especially at key times in the evening. Every room (I believe) has LAN cable internet connections. At times the connection was average/reasonable but the frustration involved with a super-slow connection, just when you need it most, is worth noting. If you are corporate connected and need an adequate connection - all of the time - look at other hotels in the Mito area.

Also, the street noise can be quiet annoying.

Stayed at Holiday Inn for around 6 nights. Pleasant, if unspectacular hotel. Staff were invariably helpful, though there were language barriers. Rooms bigger than I expected and comfortable. Bathroom also of a reasonable size,
Good selection at breakfast with both Japanese and western food available. Wide selection of fruit juices, teas, coffees etc.
Conveniently located with a 5 minute walk to the train and bus stations. I would stay here again.

The Holiday Inn Mito is a clean, friendly and reliable chain hotel that will feel familiar to any business or leisure traveler. While it has nothing particularly fantastic to set it apart from other Holiday Inns, its friendly staff and excellent location near Mito's transit links, business hubs and tourist locales make it a great choice for any kind of traveler, especially when good online rates can be found! Read on for more...

LOCATION:
The Holiday Inn Mito is located just a few blocks from the south entrance of the Mito train station. As there are escalators and broad sidewalks the entire way, even travelers with lots of parcels or luggage should find this an easy walk. The hotel is located immediately adjacent to several convenience stores and casual restaurants (including an excellent Okonomiyaki shop a few blocks to the southwest - Kakurenbo), and is directly across the street from a large Pachinko palace. For those with leisure time, there is a footpath along the canal that will take you to Lake Senba and the surrounding gardens within about 15 minutes, and continues on to the beautiful (and famous!) Kairakuen Garden, within about a 30-40 minute hike from the hotel's front door.

ROOMS:
The rooms are exactly what one would expect from a well-kept Holiday Inn. Clean, basic, slightly on the small side but spacious enough for 1 or 2 travelers to live in comfortably. The bed was a bit firm, but was in good condition. The bathrooms have a full bath, and an adjustable shower with good water pressure and temp. The spray-style Japanese toilet was a bit dated, but was clean and in good condition.

AMENITIES:
Each room has wired Internet available free of charge, as well as basic Japanese TV, with pay TV cards available for purchase. The hotel has a Chinese restaurant in-house that serves 3 meals daily, and presents a Western-style breakfast each morning (though the Asian breakfast offerings were far superior in my opinion). There is a rooftop bar open during the summer months, but has already closed for the year as of Oct 15 despite the mild weather. The indoor bar is currently closed for renovation into a party center, with a scheduled opening of November 2008. So if you want a drink in the evenings right now, your options are either to sit in the restaurant, visit a nearby pub, or get take-away from the 7/11 store across the street.

STAFF:
The front desk staff were uniformly fluent in both Japanese and English, and were very helpful with directions, restaurant recommendations and other basic inquiries. They were very customer responsive, and did their best to fulfill requests -- all of the basics, such as late checkout and luggage storage, were handled promptly and politely.

Overall, this was a great hotel for my stay in Mito and while there was nothing spectacular to set it apart as a real gem, it was reliable and everything one could hope for from a Holiday Inn. While there are plenty of other hotels in Mito, one would do well to investigate some of them thoroughly before booking remotely, as at least a few looked like they might be converted Japanese "love hotels", and still offered hourly rates advertised on their front placards. No such surprises at the Holiday Inn, and for basic business or casual travelers, this hotel would be a great choice!

This was our first trip to Japan and we ended up at this motel because we cashed in some “frequent stayer” points for a free stay. We went on short notice and loved the adventure of it. Mito is 50-60 miles from Tokyo, but easy to get to because of the rail system. The international airport (from USA) is in Narita now, not Tokyo so you can be in Mito in about the same amount of time it takes to get to Tokyo. Take the train from the airport, change trains twice (Narita and Abiko), follow the signs to the south exit out of Mito Station and walk straight for 500-600 yards to the hotel. It really is easy. All train station signs and announcements are in Japanese and English. Mito is not an international tourist destination. There is limited English spoken anywhere but the hotel front desk but if you like off the beaten path this is the place to go.
The hotel gave us a corner room on the 5th floor. That was the highest non-smoking room available. It was a standard room that was a little small by American standards but probably average for Japanese. The room was clean and unworn. The mattress and pillows were very hard. I think this is a Japanese thing. Free wired internet access, no wireless. A 3-prong to 2-prong adaptor (available at front desk) is all that is needed even though the voltage is only 100 volts, it worked. There were Toto toilets in the bathrooms (look it up) which is nice.
The breakfast buffet was about $10 per person. That was on the high side but I went ahead and did it because we were staying free. The breakfast was marginal, at best. The American section is very limited. If you got there more than 30 after the start of the buffet, the food would be barely warm. The biggest plus of the buffet was that they had honey for my coffee. There is a McDonalds across the street. The McDonalds was the only American restaurant in Mito.
The service was excellent but you have to ask for it. The Japanese respect your space and privacy and will not say anything unless you say something first.
See the surrounding country and start at the info office at the train station. The train station is the center of town and also has a mall. See the Museum of Modern Art (surprisingly good), the Art tower, go to the mountains and the coast.
