“Traditional accomodation in good value modern facility”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

This is THE good value solution in Hakone, near Hakone Yumoto. Given that a visit to the area is highly recommended, the Mori No Akari offers the possibility to stay in a traditional tatami room at a reasonable price (some 100 EUR for a double). Our room was fairly big and very clean with a nice window facing the sourronding hills. You can have access to the hot baths of the Hotel Hokada for free (including some massage chairs). Staff is gentle and not too exuberant. Indications by fellow travellers about how to reach it by foot are useful but it is pretty staightforward. The bus which takes you to the train station comes very often and the taxi ride is not very expensive either.

This is my second onsen hotel experience after Arima Onsen last October. The hotel itself is a little far, you have to ride the route A onsen bus to the second last stop to reach Hotel Okada, then take the lift to 8th floor, walk along the hall and up the escalator and then walk uphill some more, pass the Yunosato to the hotel entrance. Not easy.

But once we have settled in, everything is great. The reception staff spoke very good English and the Japanese room we had, 209, is very big and complete with bathroom.

The onsens in Yunosato and Hotel Okada are both free for us to use. We only went to Yunosato because it is much nearer and there is a linked covered walkway. The outdoor onsens are beautiful and very good. I am very impressed.

Both dinner and breakfast were served at the restaurant in the basement. Our Japanese dinner was fantastic and definitely great value for money. Breakfast was buffet style but each guest was served a piece of fried fish which was very tasty. Very happy with both meals. We also slept very well in our room.

The hotel reception was very helpful and advised us on bus times in the morning. When we boarded the bus she came out to bow.

But my one disappointment is that here we are required to go to the restaurants and laid out our own futons. At Arima Onsen we were served dinner and breakfasts in our room and housekeeping staff came in to make our futons. I suppose Arima and Hakone are probably different culturally, but I definitely prefer the Arima style more.

This is my first time to Hakone, totally love it. And I picked the perfect time to come as the fall season provides a beautiful scenery.

Yes mentioned by others, it is somewhat complicated to get to this hotel as it's located on the hill behind the sister property, Okada Hotel. And once you get off the train, you have to take the local shuttle bus on the street level (take escalator down). The local shuttle mini bus costs 100 yen and has 3 different routes. Take the Route A. Please have coins ready as they don't provide change back. Once you get on, tell the driver which hotel you are going so he will drop you off at the hotel. Take the main elevator to the 8th floor, follow the sign (by turning right, and taking the escalator up), exit the back door and you will see two buildings. One is the Hakonenomori, and the other one is the Onsen. I know it sounds complicated. But in reality, it's not too bad.

One major advantage of this hotel is that guests have access to an full service Onsen, which is open to non-hotel paying customers. Because of that, the size and facilities are much better than other in-house onsen. The onsen has separate areas for each gender, and each area has about 6 pools of various styles, as well as a sauna. On another level is their massage and rest area. They provide massage chairs for guests to use, free of charge. Another floor has a restaurant (for non-hotel guests I suppose). Even though the onsen is open for non-hotel guests, I didn't find it too crowded. And when I went late in the evening and early morning, there were times I had one of the pools all to myself at some point.

In terms of the hotel itself, it's pretty average. We booked a Japanese style room. We had to prepare our own beds. We don't mind it as this adds to the overall experience. Food wise, if you have not adapted to the Japanese cuisine, you may not enjoy the taste of the food. However, the presentation itself is top notch. For people who enjoy and have experienced this type of Kaiseki style meal, the quality can only be graded as average (the cooked seafood lacked any flavour).

We don't speak Japanese and the staff in general speaks very little English. They prepared some English documents to explain many things that guests need to know, including access to wifi in the lobby (no in-room internet) and instruction on making Japanese bed. However, anything more than that could be a challenge.

Overall, considering the price point, which I find very reasonable, I have no hesitation recommending this place to anyone.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night. We booked the twin room, but were upgraded to the combined Western/Japanese room. It was very spacious, and the beds were comfortable. The onsen of the hotel accross the street, which you can enter for Fred, are gorgeous, especially at night. There are separate onsen for men and women.

Slight downside to this hotel is the location (see earlier reviews). Also we thought the food wasn't superb, and if you choose to have breakfast at the hotel, be prepared for a genuine Japanese breakfast.

My husband and I loved staying at this pension. It was very clean, and had a beautiful and relaxing onsen spa which was spotless right next door. The pictures are exactly what you get. It was relaxing to soak in the beautifully rock landscaped pools outdoors amongst the lush mountains and scenery. I wish I was there now! The dinner was a delicious beef sukiyaki with lots of other little dishes. We didn't upgrade our meal and thought it was filling and tasty! We opted for the Japanese room with futon bedding and it was our first time sleeping the true Japanese way. It was comfortable and they provided written directions on how to lay the thick bedding with crisp flat sheet on top and also how to put the futon inside the cover. I thought the 9000 yen per person per night was a great deal for dinner, breakfast and spa access. Most other places I checked was a lot more. It was pretty easy to get to Hakonenomori Okada. Just take the A bus outside of the train station to "Hotel Okada". Bus personnel will direct you to the correct bus for "Hotel Okada". Follow the directions on the Hakonenomori Okada website going to the eighth floor and "UP" the escalator thru Hotel Okada to the exit. As you exit Hotel Okada, walk short distance to the right (about 40 feet) and make a left on first street and the pension entrance is immediately to the left. (You'll see the spa facility on your right). Shuttle bus fare from train station Yumoto to Hotel Okada is 100 yen. Shuttle bus doesn't take Hakone Free Pass.
