“Great hot springs, disappointing rooms”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Yes, I realize you visit for the hot springs. And their hot springs are wonderful. And so are their meals. The buffet dinner and buffet breakfast the following morning were outstanding. But I give it four stars because the rooms are small, the pillows hard as rocks, and the bathroom is something you might find in a Western RV - very small. And finally, truly disappointed that a luxury hotel of this reputation would not have someone at their registration desk who spoke even a little English. It's pretty obvious that the hotel doesn't cater to Westerners, and that's a shame.

This was our first experience of a Ryokan, and it was such fun. The staff were super friendly, and had enough English to help us use the bus, and order food and drink. Our room was lovely, with a little balcony overlooking mountains and hills. The novelty of wearing (supplied) yakatas throughout the hotel was fun. We tried the lovely hot springs baths which were lovely after a day of touring the area. The novelty of sleeping on futons, although comfortable enough, is not one I would like to do much more.
We had two evening meals which were most enjoyable, although we needed more practice in sitting on low chairs. There was a very acceptable western breakfast. We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful part of Japan.

We only spent one night at this Ryokan but it was a great experience. The room was spacious with a lovely little balcony overlooking a peaceful view of trees which was a relaxing place to enjoy a cup of Japanese tea. The evening meal and breakfast which was included was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. The icing on the cake were the hot baths which worked like magic on me to fix a sore neck! A great stay in an area which offered so much to explore.

It was a great quick stay: just one day. Surprisingly for us, both the room as well as the bathroom were rather big. Of course, everything was super clean, and the staff super friendly with us (nevertheless, they should seriously put someone in the reception that speaks better English). The best part of the hotel was the Onzen: super relaxing after a whole day walking and visiting the landscapes near the Mount Fuji! 100% recommended! On the other hand, we had included in the rate the traditional Japanese dinner: what a mistake!!! Look, I am the kind of person that enjoys all kind of food; and I am willing to try anything... but man, I couldn't eat a damn thing that night. HORRIBLE! Just a few things in the whole menu where palatable for me. Finally we walked away and decided to go to the 7eleven close to the hotel. But anyway, great stay and great day in the countryside. Convenient hotel if you want to visit the area surrounding the Fuji! The ONZEN is waiting for you at the end of the day!!!!

This Hotel was the high light of accommodation for our 3 day stay in the Hakone region. The hotel had it's own Bakery at the front of the entrance even though the staff didn't speak any English that didn't stop our translation getting across from which we took from our Japanese language book. The traditional tatami mat room we had was on the top floor Northern side & very spacious. It had Epic views of the hinterland. There were 3 great types of Onsen to choose from. The Restaurant was spacious and had many areas to choose from on where to be seated. The food was top quality, as were the staff.

Room Tip: The rooftop Pool was closed. The Onsen was fantastic and not over populated.

We loved our spacious room with the sound of the water flowing outside. We arrived after our Mt Fuji daytrip from Tokyo and booked into dinner in the Japanese restaurant there where we had a superb dinner. The best part though was going to the hot spring baths, the outdoor hot spring was just delightful nestled amongst the trees. It was cold and misty with water dripping off the plants but the water was super hot, it was a wonderful experience.

We're Americans traveling on our own. We took day tour to Hakone from Tokyo, and decided to stay one night in "traditional japanese hotel" before going to Kyoto.

So here are the plusses of this hotel:

We had rolling luggage, and from the train station it was a breeeze, and a pretty walk. Elevator literally greets you when you cross the river from the train station and delivers you right into the lobby.

The staff english was sufficient and very charming and helpful.

We had dinner in the Japanese restaurant, and the sashimi was "to die for". It was quiet (not busy) and we had great staff that tolerated our teen daughters laughing at some of the food offerings, and were quick to provide rice for the picky eaters in the crowd.

Staying here gave us a chance to sleep on the futons/experience traditional japanses hotel.

Breakfast buffet gave us view in how japanese eat breakfast, but had some western alternatives too.

Down sides:

The shower (as mentioned in other reviews) wasn't that nice, but this isn't a five star hotel and you aren't paying five star prices. It was sufficient.

I'll take a bed over the mats, thank you very much. Wish I had more than once pillow, and in fairness to staff/hotel, I didn't ask for more.

There were some japanese business men having a good time, but they left us alone and they weren't noisy, I didn't think.

all in all this hotel provided the convenience and experience we were looking for. At every opportunity, the staff was very helpful.
