Wonderful but could be better

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Feb 2024
I have been searching high and low for a good place to stay in Hakone and ended up here. First of all, i have to admit i was carried away by the cozy setup of the lobby and the attitude of the staff helping us to check in and putting our luggage into the room while we were out exploring the surrounding area. Now here's the cons:

Upon getting into the room, there is a tinge of musky smell which is still acceptable .However, i have to admit the furniture and fittings are aging. There is also a little problem with the air-conditioning/heater which tends to be not functioning well that night and I have to open the sliding door to allow some air circulation in the room. Meanwhile I also hope the frequency of the in house shuttle can be a bit more flexible especially during the rain/snow.

Putting that aside, the dinner and breakfast is really good and I think the staff is doing their best to accommodate. Of all the above, would i still recommend this place? I still would.

The breakfast buffet was so delicious and such a large variety. The room was spacious and very clean. The views were spectacular. It gave us a great taste of Japanese culture. We would stay again. The grounds are well kept and delicious tea and cookies in the lobby. Thank you for hospitality!

We splurged on a room with a private onsen, which was relaxing with a nice view to the mountains (parts of the balcony had some wear and tear, but this didn't impact our experience). We enjoyed the Japanese/French fusion dinner, which was a great way to end each day exploring Hakone (and we would recommend eating dinner at the hotel as it's a bit of a walk from the main part of Gora). Breakfast was also good, particularly the Japanese choices. We used the hotel shuttle from Gora station for both our arrival and departure which made it easy, though note the times are limited and we contacted the hotel in advance to check this.

This hotel is a bit remote but very nice. The room with its private onsen was very comfortable and stylish. Breakfast is amazing. The staff are very kind and attentive. We enjoyed our stay tremendously.

We stayed here and loved every minute of it. Being gluten free they went out of their way to accommodate us at meal times.
The room was big and spacious and we had own own private hot spring bath.
We loved getting into local attire (dressing gowns) whenever we came back to the hotel including to the restaurant- so relaxing.
A few things to note- it is out of the way of everything- if you arrive early than 3pm you will need a taxi and if you need to leave before 9:30am- good luck walking your luggage down 30 minutes of steep hills. Other than that 10/10.

A great place. The breakfast option is pretty good. Dinner could be a bit better but I’m overall very happy. The facility is very clean. It’s just a bit far from the train station or the bus stop. But it’s a quiet place. I didn’t see many if any dinner options unless you’re eating here at the hotel. Thank goodness it didn’t rain or snow while we were here 12/2022. I can’t imagine trying to walk up or down to the hotel from the train or bus station in the rain or snow. I am not even sure how older people walked around to get to the hotel. It’s a bit of an incline to do with luggage. But then again, you’re on vacation…
