“Might as well buy it”
Reviewed 1 July 2012

We came in via train from Kyoto (Y11,750/person), arriving in Odawara. Only planned to spend 1 afternoon + 1 evening before heading on to Tokyo. So buying a "2-day" Y3,900 pass, might not have been financially better, but it certainly was easier than trying to price out fares individually for the 5 various types of transport (train, cable car, ropeway, pirate boats, bus).

It took us about 1.5 hours to ride everything beginning-to-end (once is enough) and then a 20-min bus ride (although waiting for the bus took another 20 min) from the pirate ships dock back to downtown Hakone.

I gave 4 stars not because it's worth it, but because it's less headache than figuring out individual pricing and where to buy the tickets. Just buy the pass. Japan has a mind-numbing web of transit systems run by separate, individual companies. It'll save you headache later.

“Hakone Free Pass”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

This pass is very good value although, unfortunately, it's not actually free. In 2012, it costs Y5000. It includes a return train trip from Tokyo to the Hakone area and then up to 2 days use of local buses, cable cars, trains and the pirate cruise boats on Lake Ashi. It also gives discounts at local attractions etc. The Rapid Express trains are the quickest included in the ticket (about 85 minutes from Tokyo to Odawara) whereas the Express trains are actually fairly slow at about 115 minutes. I hate to think how long the Local trains take, You can also get the faster and much more comfortable Romancecars for Y870 more each way.

The included trains don't have many seats and can get extremely crowded in peak hours so I'd recommend getting on a train with seats available.

There's a recommended loop that we did which worked well. The actual travel time for the loop is about 7 hours so you can do the visit in one day as a lot of the trip is the actual travel (eg the lake cruise). Good information in English is available on the Odakyu rail company web site.
