“Take your meals elsewhere!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

Stayed a night with my wife and 2 year old kid. Getting there from Hakone-Yumoto station using the Tozan bus seemed to take forever, and to make matters worse, we missed the stop in front of the hotel and had to walk back, which is not the best thing to do if you have luggage and a 2-year old in tow. The street is winding, narrow, and drivers speed by like they're in a 'The Fast and The Furious movie'.

Check-in was fast, but the room provided to us smelled of cigarette smoke even if we specified a non-smoking room. Beds were ok, water heater was ok, a/c seemed ok but we really didn't use it much because the temperature was already chilly outside. The hotel is old. I imagine that the amenities (gym, onsen, etc) are also quite dated.

We underestimated its distance from the 'town', so do be aware of bus schedules and plan accordingly. We were forced to have dinner there and the result was a hefty tab for just 2 dishes - a lot more expensive than anything we ever ate in Tokyo itself. In contrast, the meals we had in town were about a third in cost.

Room Tip: I asked for a non-smoking room but still got one which smelled of cigarette smoke. But since it'...

I came straight out of a modern, Tokyo business hotel to this hotel and it was a bit of a shock. The exterior and interior decor are tired (and rough in places) but as another reviewer has noted, most accommodation in this price range in Hakone seems to be in a 1970s timewarp. The staff were friendly, and spoke English.

I wound up in a smoking room which was a pain, and the airconditioning pumped even more tobacco-air into it. View out the back is pretty unremarkable, so if you're interested in a view make sure you look in to where your room will be. No restaurants open in the area in the evening (Togendai has a couple of early closers), nor any convenience stores, and the hotel restaurants' menus appeared poor value for money. You can jump on a bus from the front of the hotel though (if you have the Hakone Free Pass this is as simple as showing it to the driver and pressing the button when you want to get off) and spend 5-10 minutes travelling for a number of 24-hour convenience stores or a little bit further to Sengokuhara which has a decent variety of dining options.

A sidenote: be sure you have enough to do if you intend to stay in Hakone for a night or more. I stayed overnight on the advice of a friend, but found I could have done the typical Hakone circuit in a day and been out of the region by nightfall. The extra day felt fairly pointless, but your plans may include more outside the usual sightseeing.

If you decide to go to Hakone, this hotel is a good choice. Is 20 min walking to Togendai and it has a bus stop that link to everywhere. But if I come back to Japan, I won't go to Hakone. It has nothing and Fuji is very difficult to see.

I was there with a friend and our standard twin room was a wide one, with reading area with a sofa. When we arrived it was raining so I decided to go for an open air hot spring bath... It was the best idea, do not miss it!. Next day we saw the Fujiyama mountain from the hotel and it has a bus stop that takes you to any place if you do not want to do a walk which is also quite easy from there. It has three restaurants, forget the French one and go instead for the other ones, the Japanese is very good.

Went for a weekend getaway and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is really clean and the attendants were so accommodating. English was spoken here so it was very easy to communicate. The views were beautiful although we stayed on the mountain side I would suggest to spring a couple more dollars for the lake view. Restaurants close early so be sure to get something before 8 pm but the cafe stays open till ten and the food was very good. Onsen open 24 hours a day and it was free. Tattoos are allowed as well. Couples shiatsu massage was reasonable 4200 yen for 1/2 hour in your room so you can fall asleep afterwards. The beds were the most comfortable I've ever slept on. The only complaint I had was that our air conditioning didn't work so well in the middle of the night but I believe that they turn it down to conserve energy because it worked just fine in the morning. Great hotel definitely plan on returning!

Room Tip: Spring for a lake view - you won't be disappointed!

Hakone is leisure place for Japanese. Cool clean air with great natural view and atmosphere, definitely is a retreat for the soul but the only thing we miscalculated last june when we were there was the mist. We missed one day including all the adventures we planned that day when the mist covering the air since morning till noon before we decided to catch the bus to Gotemba.

Palace hotel was a good hotel but it was old hotel but it was well maintained. The room was big and clean. Amenity was standard. Bed was good. We enjoyed our sleep.

It has onsen, but communal onsen only, no private one. I was disappointed actually because I couldn't take communal onsen which doesn't allow tattoo.

It was not many visitors during our visit in recent June.

The restaurant was supposed to be good if it was not pricey. The price was high even by Japanese standard and this is very important, there is not nearby convenience store to grab some snacks or food. We needed to take bus and it was couple stops from the hotel. Though the bus was free because we bought hakone pass. This pass was really helpful since we didn't need to pay any transportation cost anymore during our stay in Hakone, including bus to Gotemba. So anybody wants to stay here has to shop first for snacks or other foodies if don't want to be busy waiting and taking bus just to get the foodies. Waiting bus sometimes could take longer time than expected.

The bus stop is right in front of the hotel including bus to Shinjuku station Tokyo. Good location actually but we are talking about bus, so sometimes it can take up to 30 minutes waiting depend upon the condition. Cable car and the lake is very close, it is only 5-10 minutes bus ride.

Overall I enjoyed the hotel and its serene location.

The hotel is big and outdated, but most hotels in Hakone seemed like nothing has changed since the 70's. The hotel made me think of Eastern European architecture. Rooms were big and convenient, but our room was smokey (they couldn't change our room).

Restaurant and spa (massage and facials) were expensive, onsen is clean and free. Location is great: a ten minute walk (or 5 min bus ride) to the lake and the cable car and there's bus stop in front of the hotel. Buses take you to all the museums and the small town around.
