Palace Hotel Hakone

We used this hotel as part of a tour. It is in idyllic surroundings and the rooms were O.K. Breakfast was a set menu and was served - not buffet. Initially this was welcomed because it gave the prospect of a hot breakfast instead on the usual warm/cold Western buffet breakfast. Well, you could have fruit juice, fried eggs(2) OR omelette, two rashers of bacon OR a sausage, two rounds of toast with jam and butter. That is it! If you want yoghurt that is free instead of the breakfast. If you want it as an extra the cost for a small breakfast bowl of yoghurt is about £5 plus tax + 10% service charge. Some people took dinner in the hotel and paid roughly £50 for a spaghetti/pasta dish!
Stock up with a picnic before you get there!!!!

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have good views but the lower floors are not so good as there is a large flat...

As far as the appearence of the hotel, all has been written about it. We arrived at a reasonably early hour and were given room #308, after a request for a quiet room overlooking the lake. The room overlooked a wall of the adjacent bath, and was on the way to the bath, that is open 24 hours. Not exactly in the spirit of our request; after an assertive complaint, we were given exactly what we asked for, but I am wondering - do I have on my forhead or elsewhere a mysterious sign saying "succer"? ( see our experience at Hotel Niwa, Tokyo). Despite the lovely view, I would seriously suggest to think of another place to stay; the dinner was pricey and not that great, and I hate to tell you how much my husband had to pay to get a satisfying breakfast, but as my late aunt used to say " a hungry man is an angry man". Other places were far, it was cold, rainy and the flesh was weak..
So why not to eat elsewhere? Because it was cold and rainy, no restaurants anywhere near, and the flesh was weak...

This hotel is seriously dated. The reception area is redolent of every totalitarian regime, whether eastern European Communist-bloc or old-time Red China : large, empty and soulless. The rooms are of reasonable size, but decorated in the most drab fashion. Much of the bedroom furniture in both rooms our family took was elderly and scuffed. The food was uninspiring and a bit over-priced. The most redeeming features were a) the excellent, and free, public bath facility ; b) the bus stops - both directions - immediately outside and c) the charming views from the rooms towards Mount Fuji.
Not by any means the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. But utterly lacking in charm or excitement- although with a little thoughtful investment, it could be ten times better.

Room Tip: Excellent views from all sides

On a clear day you can see Lake Ashi and Mt Fuji,This hotel is in need of a little update, bathroom etc,but it is very clean and offers a choice of restaurants. The main restaurant for evening and breakfast is the Humming. This was the only hotel we found in Japan that dosen`t have buffet breakfast, but waiter service, which was very quick and excellent..Hot Springs Baths are available free all day. From this hotel we went to Lake Ashi for a cruise and cable car over Owakudani Hot Springs.

Nice hotel, good friendly service, good location and good bus links. The hotel is dated, so does need modernising, but i had expected that, reading earlier reviews, so i was not disappointed. The food was great, good quality, was a bit expensive, but was worth it, so overall i would recommend this hotel as it ticks all the boxes.

Stayed for 1 night as part of Mt Fuji trip. Excellent hotel ,slightly dated but great service even by Japanese standards, large room and although bar prices high there was ubiquitous vending machine with cheap beer by the onsen.
Onsen was a once in a lifetime experience , - never again but you must conquer western embarrassment and do it.
The best was Japenese restaurant, best presentation of food I have ever seen and service marvellous. Cost under €100 including beer and sake for 2 , not bad given location.
Oh and we saw Mt Fuji at dusk , but the hotel was better.

The hotel is slightly older but still is well maintained and clean and well maintained.

Very large rooms and nice bathrooms. I cannot comment on the food as we ate in the local village and had a great meal at what turned out to be a Korean restaurant.

The hotel is in a remote location and the bus does tai a long time to get there but it is a charming bus ride and the bus staff are very helpful.

The staff at the hotel were accommodating and helpful. My wife also really enjoyed the Onsen.

No wifi in the rooms but easily accessible and usable whilst in the seating area in the reception
