“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

The hotel may be old but it's quite charming. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and staff was very friendly. The bar was pleasant and the live pianist made for great ambiance. If I return to Hakone I think I'm pretty sure that I will stay at this lovely near 150 year old hotel.

A faded old dame on her way down. Was clearly a great hotel 50 years ago, but not so today. Overly stuffy and formal. Dining room WAY WAY overpriced -- and there is nowhere else to eat in town or around. $10 for a cup of tea! Heating in the main building bedrooms basically doesn't work and there was ZERO heat in the bathroom. It was cold and damp and dank. Faded carpets. Faded painting. Plumbing alternates between scalding and freezing in the shower.
In serious need of a serious makeover including plumbing, heating, etc.
A classic hotel but just doesn't cut it today. Sorry.

Room Tip: Avoid the main building and go for the newer wings. it's a walk but worth it

We stayed here on Honeymoon for two nights over the Xmas holidays. The guidebooks and their website lead us to believe it was a traditional grand and five-star type hotel, with all the amenities you'd expect of something that uses those words to describe itself. Its a shame really, because its an amazing place, historical, clearly stuck in its own quirky time-warp, and with huge amounts of character and 'atmosphere'. But 5-star (in 2013) its not, and I spent much of the time thinking to myself 'if only they fixed this', or 'surely they could have upgraded this part' or 'it really could use a refurb, wouldn't it be amazing if...' But they haven't, and unfortunately I suspect in the not too distant future, it will cross that border between 'tired but quirky' to 'disrepair', never to cross back.

That said, the Flower Palace wing where we stayed had lovely old rooms, with retro furniture and lovely views of the garden and the mountains beyond. The bathroom could do with a re-fit but it was clean and the shower worked and the onsen water direct to your morning shower was excellent. The onsen itself was well worth a visit or two though I'd give the Vivi spa a miss -Western prices for a massage and 1980s facial in a room that they converted from someone's granny's living room (and didn't change much). Breakfasts were expensive and unfortunately there isn't anything else locally. We ate there one night. The rather pricey Wisteria is housed in a rather bland and echo-ey church-hall type room with about as much ambiance as my old school assembly hall. But the food was decent, 'so wouldn't it be so cool if they...'.

All in all, its an experience, but I'd go back only in the summer when the drafty corridors wouldn't be an issue and the blossoming gardens on the outside would make up for the rather shabby interiors.

Room Tip: The Flower Palace rooms are ok.

This hotel is very well kept and has a friendly, helpful staff. The pubic areas are quite beautiful and the rooms large and comfortable, and plenty of hot springs water pours out of the taps. If you are in the area, it is certainly worth a night's stay. We didn't try out any of the restaurants as we prefer to try out and support the small cafes.

Lennon & Ono ate apple pie & drank tea here in the day. Multiple emperors adorn photos on the walls. Oh, & there's a knock out garden in the back.
Gonzo place. You do have to hike uphill to the entrance from the street; small enough price. Room was comfy, the breakfast buffet fun, the dining room overpriced. Hakone rocks as does hyper retro Fujiya.

We spend one night at the Fujiya Hotel.
We were welcome at the lobby and got an explanation of the hotel's many buildings and how to move around. Our luggage was carried to our room, what was good due to the many stairs there are in the older part of the hotel.
The rooms were nice and clean.
There is the possibility to enjoy hot natural spring water in the room.
There are various restaurants, although a little expensive.
Breakfast was very good. The WiFi was available in the rooms.
There is a large garden with water ponds, fishes and flowers, a nice place to have an early morning walk.
On the corridor walls they have the photos of all the famous people that spend some time at the hotel.
It was a nice stay and the many photos we took will be a good memory.

The grounds of the Fujiya Hotel are beautiful and well maintained, with lovely gardens and ponds. The hotel itself could use an update. The rooms were very big, especially for Japan, and very clean, but both the room and the washroom felt old. Staff were lovely and very helpful. The main dining room was good but very expensive. Location of the hotel is good for exploring the area.
