This world-class open-air sculpture park exhibits over 100 sculptures by leading mainly modern Western and Japanese artists, including Henry Moore and Nicky de Saint-Phalle (note to Swedish visitors: Carl Milles is also represented!), all scattered in a lush undulating park and forest scenery. Indoor exhibition halls showed contemporary art exhibitions and a well-presented smallish Picasso collection with informative English explanations. Child visitors seemed to enjoy the fantastic large climbable works of art, and we appreciated the hot spring foot bath to rest our tired feet after all browsing around. A must-see for art lovers visiting Hakone area.

Definitely worth a visit if you like sculptures. There are Japanese artists and non-Japanese artists represented. Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth are well represented, and the park is refreshing in it's layout and greenery.

If your feet are tired there are footbaths to help you rejuvenate.

Make sure you go to the top of the tower near the footbaths, the climb is a little strenuous but the views are nice and looking down on the sculptures is an interesting perspective.

A fun few hours out for all the family.

A fabulous collection is a beautiful location. We are a family with teens who are not frequent art museum visitors. The museum exceeded our expectations. All 4 of us agreed that it was time well spent. We preferred the large outdoor pieces to the Picasso collection. Only negative is that the 2 play areas were only for little kids. I can see why that was necessary, but still felt left out.

I am not a big museum person but this museum was AMAZING and is now my favorite museum. If you are in Hakone it is not to be missed. The ride up the Hakone Tozan line is beautiful, but make sure to set aside 30 minutes just for this trip up the mountain. The museum has some indoor exhibitions including the Picasso exhibit but the majority are outdoor sculptures scattered across the picturesque grounds. If you have kids, this is a definitely a place to bring them. Several sculptures and installations are meant to be played on by children (and I so wanted to climb on them but there were signs prohibiting adults from climbing on them.) Lots of open area for kids to run around and an indoor play room that is even baby friendly. The artwork and the grounds together make for a spectacular place to relax and take in the beauty of Hakone.
