We really wanted to try the famous experience of Hakone during our journey in Japan. We knew that we would feel more comfortable by having a private thermal warm bath (private Onsen) in our accommodation.
So after researching on Japanese websites (thanks Google translator) we finally found out that only suites had private Onsen but at a so expensive price. A promotion on a web site for the Hotel Manate (very modern, opened two years ago) was offering a discounted price (almost half price) so we decided to book 2 nights. We enjoyed every single moment of our stay! Only two staff members were able to speak English but that was not a big issue.
We arrived by bus (there is a bus stop 2 mn top the hotel coming directly from Shikensen Train Sation in Odawara city but you can also take the taxi or a smaller train). They offered us tea while explaining the hotel, restaurant opening hours and facilities.
The Suite was really nice, we had the private onsen, a king size bed and a day time bed with a lot of pillows an a amazing view on the mountain. In the bathroom, only a shower but a lot of small beauty products and equipped with the famous typical high technological WC.
At our check in, we asked for a traditional Japanese massage and that was arranged efficiently one hour after our arrival. The massage itself was a kind of deep tissue massage. It’s was delivered at our convenience either in our room or in a spa. Be aware that you have to keep your clothes on as they don’t use oil and that therapists don’t speak English (FYI “Koko” mean “here” in Japanese).
We were invited to have a dinner in a private cosy room and each night we had a four course Japanese dinner with for example: vegetable tempura, red tuna with soya sauce jelly, red snaper sashimi, soups ect… just amazing! Mornings breakfasts were Japanese salty food with salmons and miso soups, tea ect…
In the hotel, you have also a free manicure station and three medium onsen that you can privatise by closing it so you can be with your husband/wife. Moreover the hotel has amazing view on the surrounding mountains.
We have to salute the staff service, it was just amazing. They advised us about the best way to visit Hakone, drove us to the train station, helped us with free wifi issues that we had…. They even offered us present when we left!
Btw we did this tour: Hakone Ropeway up to Owakudani Valley to try the black eggs, down to the Pirate Ships ferry to cross Lake Ashi and then Hakone to make a small tour. It was cloudy all day but we were so lucky to have at the end of the day a just AMAZING view of Mount Fuji from Hakone.
