Wonderful place

Review of Hakone Ginyu
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Dec 2012
We spent 2 nights here in April 2012 and had a wonderful time. It certainly lived up to our expectations and we were glad to have splashed out a bit, it was a perfect way to end our stay in Japan.

The food was by far the highlight of our stay. Make sure to arrive on an empty stomach! Beautifully presented and very tasty. I was pregnant and the staff were mindful to make sure that none of the dishes contained raw meat or fish - I was given lobster to replace the sushi one night - my husband was rather jealous!

Another highlight was the onsen/ bath on the balcony.

Beautiful bathroom with lots of nice products. We slept on futons, for the price we paid for the room, I would have liked a nice comfortable bed! However on the 2nd night they offered to double up my futon which made a big difference. If I hadn't been pregnant I would have been fine.

This was my first time to Ginyu and I was travel with my girl friend. We stayed there for 1 night in the Sora room. The ryokan is very close to train station. Walk down from the station and turn right, its only 30 metres away before turn left. The date we went was raining, the moment we arrived outside. One of the staff already came out and welcome us. He helped us to carry luggage into the reception area. We started with a welcome drink at the bar. And the gentleman help us to carry luggage show us all the way to our room and explain every bit there. The room we stayed was well presented, just like the official website photo. Welcome snack was there minutes we arrived in the room. It was so relax because it was misty and raining outside. Dinner was very good, food was fresh and well presented. BUT it took so long between each dishes. We almost gave up. We started dinner at 6.30-7pm and finish almost at 9.30pm. Its simply too long for a dinner course.
Next day when we check out, the ryokan staff helped us to carry luggage all the way to the bus stop. The over all experience was very good and I would highly recommend to everyone. It's expensive (at least to me), but from customer service to quality of the ryokan, it worth every dollar.

If you're going to stay in a ryokan, you might as well do it properly. Hakone Ginyu makes a fine art of a very Japanese experience where you have a traditional but utterly luxurious suite with your own private onsen (hot spring bath), mountain views and a traditional maid who serves you a course dinner of fine Japanese cuisine. Our maid was absolutely fantastic, partly because she had a good sense of humour so we didn't have to take it all too seriously.

We stayed for one night, arriving mid afternoon, enjoying our onsen, drinking at the bar before our course dinner and then exploring Hakone with our Hakone Free Pass (buy at the station before you get here) the next morning.

At £480 this was the most expensive night of my life but it's a testament to the experience that it almost feels worth it.

My wife and I recently returned from a 1 night stay at Hakone Ginyu and we absolutely enjoyed it. Even now being back at home we wish were were soaking in our wonderful outdoor onsen, admiring the views of the mountains, while sipping on ice cold sake. My review here will be short because I feel most previous positive reviewers have accurately portrayed this ryokan.

Yes, it is expensive however in the end I think the experience of it all is worthwhile. We booked a Hoshi type room on the 3rd floor, with Japanese futons - being from the USA, I had to double up on the mattress, but still slept well :) Room was quite large with all the mod-cons you would expect of a 5* establishment. The private outdoor onsen was the highlight of our stay and we spent as much time as possible in it. The food overall was good, but not great in my opinion, however the presentation and service really make the dinner and breakfast special. Staff overall were very delightful although most had limited English skills. We got a couples massage on the day of check out and it was one of the best I've experienced to date. There is also a cool little bar on the 1st floor in which I recommend grabbing a drink or nightcap at. We didn't explore the surrounding area because of time limitations, however we did get to enjoy a great tempura lunch in Myanoshita, about a 6 minute walk from Hakone Ginyu, the staff will know the place.

A good tip on how to find Hakone Ginyu: if you arrive by train, proceed down the hill to the intersection, turn right, Hakone Ginyu will be about 75 yards up on the left - almost directly across from the gas station.

Hakone Ginyu have been my worst ever experience.
i booked 3 rooms, and spent 214000 yens (2400€) for that single night.
ok, the place was really looking good, the rooms were nice and the staff was pretty OK (even if 90% cant speak english, which is weird for a luxury place)

let me start with what made that experience a total failure: the diner

-ive told 6 months in advance that i dont eat seafood so i guess they had some time to make a special menu for me... but no, i had the same sheet than my friends and discovered the full seafood menu.. no problem, i love surprises so lets see what the chief made for me!
first seafood course my friends got sashimis and i got.......
Fried chicken with soya saulce (i can get that in any izakaya for 300 yens and it is better than it was at hakone ginyu)
second seafood course i got:
the cheapest ever beef part of the cheapest beef in japan: wanna know the taste? just buy the cheapeast beef you can find in a combini, put it on freezer for like 10 years, then burn it in a microwave and eat
3nd seafood course i got:
the same beef, cutted in an other way
4nd seafood course i got:
the same beef, cutted in a 3nd way
5nd course is the best one:
i got ................
White rice.
yes you readed well,
i payed 214000 yens and i got WHITE RICE as a course of my menu. just a bowl of white rice with nothing else.
I never ever felt so much insulted

i waited so many months and worked so many time to afford this place, to end up like this?

Also (and this is not a surprise) no compensation have been offered, hotel is just "sorry" that i didnt enjoyed my stay
They also sent me a fake menu (saying i got cooked rice with beef etc...) and that i didnt got white rice as a course. They think i cant make difference between white rice and cooked rice.

Other things u have to know:
- jacuzzi is turned off at 10pm
- staff wont help you carrying luggages from car to hotel lobby

We stayed a precious one night here (last minute decision and were lucky there was a cancellation), checked in at 2.30pm and didn't leave until check out the next day. With our love for Boutique Hotels, this was right up there amongst our favorites. This ryokan was intimate, we hardly saw other guests despite its full occupancy. The public baths had a pretty view - althou one is much bigger than the other, so it depends on time of the day, where they switch male and female baths. Worth checking out...just for the experience.

Our Tsuki Japanese room was large and beautiful with the garden and private onsen. I loved the yukatas they provided (summer version of traditional japanese wear), and only wished they had my size to buy one home! And the highlight was most definitely the meals - both the kaiseki at night and the extravagant breakfast in the morning. Each course was exquisite "art" on a plate, and very fresh and unique in textures and flavors. You need to be adventurous to enjoy the meal - as I didn't know what I was eating half the time. But really...that's half the fun. Breakfast was the same - more food than you could possibly finish but beautifully presented and tasty. It was truly luxurious and grand....the whole experience.

P.S. We bought the Hakone Free Pass for our 2D 1N stay and found it worth while. We took the 10am train from Shinjuku, then the Tozan Railway to the Open Air Museum - highly recommended. By the time we finished a quick lunch (opp. that station - the best tempura!), we were in time to check into the ryokan and relax.

Room tip: Go during winter - it's WAY easier to soak in that hot onsen!
