“A wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014 via mobile

This was my family's fourth onsen ryokan experience, and by far the best. We had a bath in our room, which was great for the kids to play with during the day, and allowed for a shared bath in the evening. The views are breathtaking, and it's very calming to bathe while peering out over the green valley.
As someone who loves japanese food, and good food in general I was very happy to have the kaiseki dinner. Honestly, one if the best dinners I've had in Japan (not considering 20000+ yen dinners in tokyo).
The service was also really nice, they tried their best and I didnt find the language to be any problem.
If there's anything to remark upon, maybe it's the onsen water itself. It's warm and nice but doesn't feel like it is very rich in minerals. Although for me this is a minor point.

Event though it has almost been 3 years since I was here, it was such an unforgettable experience that I sometimes remember it and find myself daydreaming of going back. Even though it´s on the expensive side, the experience is like no other, from being barefoot, wearing a yukata and just admiring the surroundings.
My husband and I stayed in a western room one day and a japanese room the next, I have to say that the japanese room takes all the credit, add the experience of the kaiseki meals, and your private onsen bath and it´s the perfect way to relax and wind down after the madness that is traveling around japan.
Don´t miss the hakone open air museum and the opportunity to ride the swiss style train.

Room Tip: Definitely go for full japanese experience and ask for a japanese style bedroom.

We visited Japan and stayed at Hakone Ginyu last year (May 2013 ...i'm ashamed it has taken me this long to write a review!) ..it was by far the highlight of our trip. Suzuki, who works at the hotel, was incredibly helpful and so kind! we had booked the ryokan a few weeks in advance using Skype from the united states. We had a lot of dietary restrictions and Suzuki made note of them and made sure we would be taken care of. We spent a week in Tokyo before exploring other parts of Japan, and Suzuki surprised us by sending us an information package of Hakone Ginyu to our Tokyo hotel, including directions on how to get to the ryokan from the train station (a very easy taxi ride!). we were treated like royalty at hakone ginyu and all the staff went above and beyond to make our experience incredible. The private onsen (hot spring) was pure bliss!!! And the meals that you are given for dinner and breakfast are over the top amazing! From the presentation to the taste...not to mention how filling it was too!! We will definitely return, for the ryokan and to say hello to Suzuki again!! thank you hakone ginyu!!

Room Tip: The Japanese style rooms are amazing experience especially if you are used to western style rooms.

My husband and I just stayed here with our young baby, along with my Mother & Father- Inlaw.
As soon as we walked in we were blown away by the stunning views, what a beautiful location the hotel was set in.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful, they took us to our room and came back with some tea and cake which was nice.

The private onsen was on the balcony in our and it was amazing! Sitting in the hot bath while taking in the stunning view, was just perfect.
The whole room was lovely, very traditional Japanese style and had all the necessity's you need, they also provided Japanese attire to wear after your bath.

In the evening we had a complementary drink at the bar and then had a 9 course meal served to our room and it was delicious.
While we were having dinner the staff came to our room and prepared a futon bed for us, which was great and very comfy.

In the morning we had a large breakfast with a variety of different choices and it was all very nice.

Overall this was a perfect little break in a stunning location, great way to relax.

On our first trip to Japan my husband and I wanted to experience an onsen but didn't want to have to be apart the entire time. (Most onsen are segregated by gender.) Hakone Ginyu, with a private onsen in each room, was the perfect option for us. Although getting here was a lengthy process and service could have been better, we are glad we came and experienced both the onsen and the beauty of this location.

The ryokan itself is lovely and the rooms on higher floors have great views of the forested hillside. The rooms are large, and the dining table is sunken, which means it's much more comfortable for those of us not used to sitting on the floor for hours at a time. The traditional kaiseki meal was tasty, although not the best one we had in Japan. The onsen was wonderful, especially since the weather was cold and rainy during our visit.

Service was ok, but generally unimpressive when compared to everywhere else we stayed while in Japan and for the price we paid for our stay here. For example, we were left standing around in the lobby for a while both when we checked in and checked out. In addition, it was raining heavily when we left, and no one helped us get a taxi or offered us a quick ride to the train station. That said, the woman who served us dinner and breakfast in our room was absolutely wonderful and quite friendly.

Getting here is a bit onerous. You have to take a Shinkasen to Odawara Station and then ride the Hakone Tozan Railway to Miyanoshita Station. (If you're coming from Kyoto, many of the Shinkasen routes aren't direct and take a long time. We rode Shinkasen Hikari 512, which got us to Odawara in two hours with no transfers.) The Hakone Tozan Railway consists of two sections. First you ride to Hakone-Yumoto Station, where you get off and transfer to a different train. The second train has a very steep route, so there are switchbacks between several of the stations. (The train car is small and was very crowded every time we rode it, so I highly recommend you use the luggage delivery service to send the bulk of your things on to your next stop in Japan.) Once you arrive at Miyanoshita station, walk down the steep hill, turn right, and the hotel will be on the left side of the road a little ways down (across the street from the gas station).

Finally, please note that you need to book this ryokan through The Ryokan Collection, which told us that this is one of the the most popular ryokans in Japan, so book well in advance.

Room Tip: First floor rooms have a private garden. Higher floors have better views.

We had a wonderful experience here: the 4th floor room was much larger than I expected and very private with magnificent views, the attendants were outstanding and we communicated easily. Dinner was exceptional. What prevents me from giving this 5 stars is the slightly worn state of our room and the public rooms. Peeling paint, stained upholstery, outdoor public areas needed weeding, scratches, dents and worn wood surfaces . These things did not diminish our enjoyment but for the price of the room (over $800 US), everything should be in pristine condition. Hopefully the condition will not be allowed to deteriorate further.

We stayed for two nights in the middle of our Japan trip………… this was a major highlight in a fabulous trip.
The staff are fabulous, the hotel is amazing and the Japanese food is just out of this world.

Our room was huge with two hot tubs (one inside, one outside)

I am lost for superlatives to describe how good this experience was…..all I can say if you are thinking about going to a Ryoken then go to Hakone Ginyu

Room Tip: Level 1 opens out to a garden….just stunning and very private
