Lakeside Inn Charlotte

We loved our stay at the Lakeside Charlotte pension! The rooms are fairly basic and loosely in the Japanese ryokan style. It was nice to settle in with a hot bath, green tea and relax in the yukotans provided.

The view from the first floor room was fabulous!

Despite other reviews on here, we thought the manager was fantastic! Couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. In fact, we got so carried away chatting with him and fellow guests and drinking the (mostly complimentary) Japanese beers, wines and spirits, that we forgot to go for dinner!! Never fear, off he went to bring us a selection of (again gratis) nibbles to keep us going.

Also got lots of good tips on getting the best out of the local sites. He was certainly right that it's worth an early start to walk to the edge of the lake to see the sun rise over the lake, illuminating mount Fuji as the fishing boats set off. Amazing photographs were obtained!

Oh, and yummy breakfast too!

(Please note this review is for a stay in November 2010)

Room Tip: There's no lift so go for first floor (English first floor i.e. up one flight of stairs)

Place - clean and spacious, we have a good view of Lake Ashi. Toilet is clean with hot water. I was surprised to have a kimono for each of us.
Food - we arrived barely 6pm and at 6:30 had our good dinner. it was autumun when we arrived and the hot soup was a real treat. We started with an appetizer, good for our taste buds and the presentation is really good with the owner/cook explaining us what it is and from what it is made.
Staff - friendly and accomodating without being intrusive. There are two staff, i believe the older one is the owner and the other is a relative, both can speak english. They talk to us over dinner and breakfast . They are helpful in our questions and introduce us to an onsen which is another good experience.

We are a family of 5 from Singapore. Charlotte Inn has a family room that comes with two double decker beds and one single bed. It suit our family very well. Our kids love it ! From our room, we have an excellent view of the Lake Ashi and a 5 mins walk from the Inn you will get to see an excellent view of Mt Fuji. The Inn is located within 7 mins walk from the Pirate ferry station. Mac Hattori the hotel manager is very helpful . Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Dinner was a huge soup pot that comes with ample noodles and seafood. We also had a huge Japanese crab ! Breakfast was just a filling. After dinner, Mac Hattori took us to the local Onsen that was about 20 mins drive from the Inn. He waited about two hours for us to bath and drove us back to the Inn. Price was really resonable at about Yen2,000 per person. The ride to and from Onsen were free. Overall, we had a great time there !

Pros
Clean. Mostly helpful ownership and English competent. Great view of Lake Ashi. Free ride to a small onsen every night. Price while high was one of the only reasonable options under $100 per person per night.

Cons
Poor value - $100 per person per night for a 2-star place. No hot water. Bathroom unheated and smells bad despite extensive air freshening. 15-20-year dated furniture/appliances, stained and worn carpet, uneven heating throughout room. It seems that although owners opened this place 2003, they didn't renovate it much. The location beside Lake Ashi is great for view, but bad for external services - all restaurants nearby close at 4pm and the only option nearby is 7-11... there are far more options near Hakone-Yumoto Station. The onsen they bring you to is okay but there are much better at the same price. Ownership locks door 10:30 every night - no in & out privileges. Be prepared to sit in your room from ~8:30pm until you sleep.

This adorable B&B is 30 seconds from the lake. Dinning area as well as several rooms have beautiful views of the lake. The staff was excellent and extremely helpful. They recommend the Hakone-Free Pass for touring during the day, allowing us to get in many of the great attractions Hakone has to offer. Roughly 3 hours travel time from Tokyo. We also enjoyed an Onsen the B&B recommended and drove us too, this really allowed us to relax in the hot springs. If you have the time would highly recommend the Hakone Open Air Museum. Quiet but beautiful town, everything closes early, so it's really a place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Stayed here for two nights, the room was large with awesome veiws over Lake Ashi, I found the manager to be helpfull, freindly and one hell of a cook, i am a bit perplexed by other reveiws regarding the manager, as a multiple visiter to Japan and well versed in Japanese culture and society I find some of these reveiws ignorant and downright rude. Lighten up, enjoy his personality and you will find a warm, extremely helpful and kind man only intent on making your stay enjoyable. Sure you can stay 5 star in the area and pay a fortune, but this little hotel had clean sheets, clean bathroom and toilet and the best veiws imaginable for a fraction of the cost of other Hotels in the area, add to this the freindly staff and I found it a winner. As for no internet, well people if you cant live without internet for a few days and enjoy the ambience ofr the area without being connected I think you need a reality check. We will go back!!!

As all the reviews have stated, 'WATCH OUT FOR THE MANAGER!!!'
Stayed here for 1 night. There is NO FREEDOM AT ALL!!! The manager questions us on our itinerary like we are criminals. When we asked him for advise, he would stare at us rudely and tell us about the transport system in Japan and that it is never late. When we asked about the last bus, he would refuse to tell us and even said that many people missed that bus. I diskile his attitude toward the guest.
Breakfast was at 8am. But he didn't mention that it is at 8am and not like most hotels that I went which is from 8am. We were only late for 15 mins and was SCOLDED by him. What an unfriendly host!!! I thought Japanese are kind and polite but he is one blacksheep among the Japanese pepple. I'll never stay here ever again, much less reccommend to any one in the world.
