We spent 3 nights in the hotel, which had seen its best times years ago. The staff was very friendly. The rooms are very old fashioned western syle. The problem is, that the kitchen tries to cook western style. The salat, fish and dessert is quite good, main dish (meat) and soup has a poor quality. At three evenings we got 3 times crop sout, and the same accompaniments (potato in aluminium foil & piece of a corncob). Beef was extremely fatty, hard to eat.
They have an inside and outside hot bath (i dont know if its really an onsen) but the water seems to be clorinated. But its ok.

this hotel looks vaguely bavarian from the outside but inside it's mostly Japanese. Not a modern hotel but the rooms were adequate. The surprise was in the 5 course dinner we had which was included in the price! Every course was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Entree, soup, fish, steak, fruit. It was 5 star! Another surprise - massage chair, footstool, cushion in the lobby. Really nice after sleeping on floors in Japan

The name of this place is very misleading, to put it mildly. There are three shrubs in front of the hotel and a tree in the back. But the hotel is located on a busy road leading out west of Nikko. If you have a roadside room you will not be able to sleep.

The hotel must have been built in the late 70s and was obviously never renovated nor redecorated since. In our room there were stains on carpets and curtains, the veneer on the furniture was cracked or scratched, the sofa had its filling spilling over several holes and torn edges. The bedside reading lamp did not work.
The dining room is probably one of the saddest and depressing places I have ever sat in. Out of compassion for the staff I will not describe the food.

The true scandal however is that this place charges 20.000 yen per person per night. For that money one can find excellent alternatives in the area, IF YOU PLAN AHEAD.

Our loyalty to Japan as a tourist destination is undiminished and we have been going there annually for twelve years now and never did we stay in such a dishonest and terrible place.

  • Liked — That we got our money back from the travel agent

I was having trouble finding a vacancy in Nikko at the more popular hotels and those reviewed by Trip Advisor so I booked this through Japan Hotels Online. The hotel is on the mainroad out of Nikko towards Lake Chuzenji. Our room (with balcony) on the second floor facing the street was noisy because of the traffic on this road. The room was clean but the furnishings were very basic. The sofa had a water stain and the armchair was very worn. The halls had a strong smell of cigarette smoke and the room did a little too.The man at the front desk spoke enough English to be helpful. There is a hot spring (onsen) at the hotel, both indoor and outdoor, separate for men and women. A bus stop is conveniently located just outside the hotel and a rather large grocery store just 10 minutes walk up the road. The shrine area is about 20 minutes down the road but also served by the bus. We ate dinner at the hotel one night and found the food to be outstanding. Breakfast was ample and not buffet style; eggs and meat, soup, salad, fruit, juice, coffee and bread. What we found odd for the resort town of Nikko was that most restaurants in town closed before 6 PM leaving few options for dinner. We were told most people eat at their hotel, is this a 'chicken or egg' issue? If restaurants were available, people would not have to eat at their hotel.

  • Liked — The onsen (hot mineral bath)was nice
  • Disliked — Furnishings were shabby, traffic noise from highway.
