The room is small for a westerner but normal for Japanese standards. This is a typical Japanese hot spring hotel. Very impressive inside and the cheapest of the high range in Japan.
The price is average or maybe a bit low for this kind of hotel in Japan but the dinner buffet is top. It has a massive choice of quality Japanese food (and non) and has the Atlantic giant crab (only that cost 100 usd in Japan)
We had so much to eat that we did not feel hungry until the next dinner that we re-booked....

We spent 1 night here with buffet dinner and breakfast plan.

Asaya is very big and many facilities for all members of family ; game room, karaoke, spa , massage and Onsen.

The Onsens are so nice especially the roof top one because you can see the mountain view from there.

The dinner buffet was very nice taste with variety of food. The quality also very good. The breakfast was good too

We stayed here for two nights and I highly recommend it. The hotel is positioned on the side of a gorge with bright blue melt water running through it. It's huge and has a small army of people who will take care of you when you arrive. For example there were three women in full kimono bowing when we turned up in our car!
We stayed in a room with a private outdoor bath and it was lovely. Big tatami room with a separate lounge area with sofas and a big bedroom. It's a very modern room with the best appliances and fittings but all done in a classical Japanese style. There are sliding doors which look like the paper screens of old, and carved wood panels. It could be kitsch but it really isn't, it's a lovely place to be.
There are several public onsen baths which are free to use, as well as 4 which can be hired privately. These are great for couples who want to bathe together as all the public baths are gender segregated. The private baths cost 4000 yen for 50 minutes so not cheap. We had a private outdoor bath which was lovely and had a cold water tap for altering the temperature. The hot water was still the volcanic onsen water so it still has all the theraputic properties.
There are restaurants here but most people go for the buffet breakfast and dinner. Buffet doesn't really do this justice as it's absolutely huge! There are so many types of food available it's a lot of fun trying them all. The dessert bar alone was bigger than most buffets I've seen in other places.
One word of warning, this is a busy hotel with lots of guests. The buffet is pretty much always busy and if you don't cope well with lots of people it can get annoying.
This is a fun place to stay and relax. Pretty much everyone walks around in the hotel supplied yukata dressing gowns. They have sizes for giant foreigners too so we did this as well, it's a nice Japanese experience.

I only stayed one night and i am so sorry I was unable to extend my stay. I loved this hotel. There are three different areas of hot spring areas, but the rooftop at night can not be beat. Absolutely wonderful. In all, I soaked in 8 different hot springs pools.

There was one person at the front desk who spoke English. She came to my room and explained all the rules, since this hotel is sort of like a Ryokan where people walk around in the bathrobe things (even to the buffet). My room was huge - I don't know why some other reviews say their room was small. My floor mattress was comfortable and I slept very well.

The woman at the front desk told me about a night cherry blossom festival. I took her advice and went there, and it was truly the highlight of my Japan trip. I walked from the hotel. The lit up trees were beautiful, and they had Geisha dancing women.

The dinner and breakfast buffets at this restaurant were absolutely outstanding. I couldn't even sample little bites of 50% of what was available - there was so much variety. And it was the only time I was able to enjoy a green salad on my trip (they don't serve those in Japanese restaurants!). There is a time reservation system for dinner and it seemed to work well.

I didn't utilize the bar, but I was grateful that the hotel has vending machines with beer and wine coolers.

There is a refrigerator in the room and the WiFi worked well.

I used the two day Tobu rail pass. There is a shuttle bus from the Kinugawa Onsen station. Just ask at the information center when you get off the train, and they will direct you to the shuttle stop. The shuttle driver will ask your hotel. It was about 210 yen for the shuttle. The hotel has a direct shuttle (for a fee) to Top of the World and Edo Wonderland. Tip: You can take a free bus from Edo Wonderland to the JR train station in Nikko. It is a big red bus and the times are listed clearly at the bus station.

If you have the Tobu rail pass (which you buy online before visting), you can go back and forth to Nikko and Kingwasen Onsen and ride all the buses to the shines, the lake, etc in Nikko. The buses to the lake don't run very often in the afternoon, so if you want to see the famous waterfall maybe do that first and then visit the world heritage area afterwards.

I loved Nikko and enjoyed my stay at the Asaya hotel immensely!!!

Apart from the beautiful, renovated rooftop onsen, the hotel is very old, and you can see that... sofas in the common areas look old, rooms look very old. Hotel needs deep renovation.
Reception staff is very, very friendly.
