“Small shrines in World Heritage Site”
Reviewed 23 December 2012

This is included on the combination pass, so is worth a visit. It's quite small, with a number of small shrines vaguely themed with food. Children seemed to like it for things to pull, but it only merits a fairly brief visit.

“Not much to see”
Reviewed 22 September 2012

We visited here as part of our combination pass. The majority of the other temples/shrines you were able to walk around practically all of the complex and pay for additional/special areas. For us it appeared that you just walked into this Shrine and whether you wanted to go left or right you had to pay extra, which we found a bit odd.
As always it was a beautiful serene shrine and worth visiting but I didn't see the point of having a pass which didn't let you in anywhere!

“Look for the tree's”
Reviewed 16 July 2012

Peppered around Nikko you will find various trees of interest. Couple tree's and of special note to many the Mother, Father, Child tree in this complex. I enjoyed the walk up to this complex, but didn't find this site to be any more interesting than many of shrines I have visited. If you have to pay seperately to see this site, I would recommend spending your money elsewhere.

“Quiet and overshadowed, but with it's own charm”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

One of three Futarasan shrines dedicated to the gods of the nearby sacred peaks, this is not as grand as the other temple complexes, but still possesses a quiet and more spiritual atmosphere, probably due to being less popular. While the others are Buddhist temples, this is a Shinto shrine (despite being founded by a Buddhist monk), and as such many of the trees are revered, encircled by sacred ropes and paper charms. Some national treasures are housed here, like a impossibly long sword reputedly used to kill a notorious demon.

Take a break from the frenetic pace at the other temples and rest a while here, and relax a while among the tall and ancient pines, especially when the sun is low in the horizon, bathing the scenery in a golden glow.

Nice shrine with many trees in pairs and triples. Structures are mostly red.
