“Nice place to begin hike to Yutaki Falls and Senjohahara”

The small resort town is really just a group of hotels. Very quiet. There are good hiking trails around the lake. Follow the trail around the far side of the lake to Yutaki Falls and then continue the Senjogahara Plateau to Ryuzu Falls. Takes about 3 hours plus stops. Then catch the bus to wherever.

Lake Yunoko is further up the Nihon Romantic Hwy from Lake Chuzenji but is worth the trip.
We hired a car for the day to drive up here - you can catch the bus, but it takes MUCH longer.
Driving is preferable.
Also if you plan on visiting leave Nikko early, as the highway clogs up with traffic later in the morning.
The lake is a very beautiful & tranquil place - we were there at a time when we could see the start of the autumn colour. Yutaki Falls starts at the bottom end of the lake & you can walk all the way down to the viewing platform at the base of the falls - definitely worthwhile if you are up to it. It's not overly strenuous, but you still need reasonable mobility.
Less strenuous is the walk around the lake itself & there are magnificent vistas at every turn.
A lovely counterbalance to the man-made attractions of Nikko.

Compare to Chuzenji, this lake is relatively less commercialize n quiet lake, there's 2 hiking trail around the pond - an easy 40mins flower trail and a longer & more difficult forest trail

It's very nice and tranquil setting. good walking path around it and leading to the waterfall at the edge of the lake. Plenty of hot spring bath around the lake too if you want to take a dip. The peaks dotted the horizon while you walk give majestic views. Very relaxing, Good change from the cultural immersion of the shrines downhill.

Travelled to Yumoto Onsen and Yunoko Lake is located here. Didn't expect this place to be so quiet as I don't see many people walking around the street, not sure if because it was too cold in the winter season or because they are dipping inside the hotspring.

The view of the lake was spectacular in winter, having half of the lake covered by frozen ice, it was just too amazing.

If you are travelling to Nikko, please do not just go to Lake Chuzenji. This place offers better peace of mind to you!
