I found this ryokan completely by chance - it was too busy in Tokyo and I was looking for 1 night
"Getaway". The only thing I am sorry about is that we didn't have enough time to stay there more...

Lovely owners with limited English but trying so much to make your stay as pleasant as possible...
Beautiful river and surrounding and wonderful fresh air

And if you love the real Japanese food - book a special dinner
at the owner's home - we really enjoyed it!

Room Tip: I think no need - it's a ryokan at the river side with a beautiful view

Our first visit to countryside hotel in Japan. We visited in winter and walked all over Nikko. Our room was warm, clean, and comfortable. The morning meal was very good and well prepared. We would definitely stay her the next time we visit Nikko.

We loved staying here. It is a really cute, cosy inn set in a tranquil, quite spot. The owners are so welcoming and speak good English. They are more than happy to help with any questions and give good advice. We booked a twin room but ended up getting a family room with a double and single bed in it. The room was a good size. Slightly old fashioned decor but that all added to the charm of the place. The inn is located near the river and you can hear it running outside. It is well located with a 10 minute walk to all the temples and shrines. It is further away from the train station, around a 35 minute walk, but the are plenty of buses to and from the station that only take 10 minutes. We ordered breakfast one of the days. It was fine and did the job, boiled egg, fruit and toast. We didn't have dinner here so can't comment.
We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend it if you are looking to be near the sights and have some peace and quite.

You couldn't ask for a better location than the Turtle Inn; it's far enough off the main roads to have no traffic noise, but walk 10 minutes and you're smack in the middle of the main sights in Nikko. There's a post office about 5 minutes' walk away, handy for withdrawing cash using a foreign ATM card. The kaiseki-style dinner we had was excellent, served in a cute dining area with lots of turtle-related decorations. The owner speaks decent English and is happy to show you where everything is on a map.

But there are cons. The rooms are pretty worn and, though not dirty, not exactly clean either; our carpet had a bunch of dead insects, somewhat understandable given the place is right next to a forest but still not pleasant. Non-smokers won't appreciate the fact that the public smoking area is just a little alcove off the main hall and you have to pass through it on your way to your room and back. The "western-style" breakfast consists of a few thick slices of toast and a hard-boiled egg; you'll eat better at the nearby convenience store.

Worth staying for the location and the reasonable price by Nikko standards.

The cutest Inn! Very friendly staff, it has a really nice, homely feel to it. We stayed as a group, and took up all the rooms (it was a last minute booking, and they were SO accommodating). Stayed in a room with 3 other women, and we had futons (which were very comfortable), and the rooms were warm, and I slept well.

One of the best things about the stay was the fact that there was a Japanese bathing room, with hot spring baths which were fantastic. We had the breakfast the next day which was alright, a selection of fruit, breads and egg, tea/coffee, but it was nice to be served a hot breakfast. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay, would happily return. The Turtle Inn is also very close to several Shrines and Temples, you can walk to many tourist spots which is cool. I'd love to thank the owners/staff for our stay!
