“Astoundingly Luxurious Ryokan on Sea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

Oyado The Earth is an astoundingly beautiful, very luxurious ryokan located on a hot springs, right at the edge of the sea, about 20 minutes drive from Toba. All rooms are suites with a separate sleeping and sitting areas plus stunning ocean views; one room is available with a bed instead of a futon. Our room had both an indoor deep bathtub plus a double soaking tub on the patio filled with natural hot springs water. The public spaces are architecturally beautiful and provide amazing insight into feng shui. The dining area is especially gorgeous; there are a number of partially separated, private rooms plus a large open hexagon-shaped room with stunning ocean views. All meals were extraordinary, and the 12-course dinner each night was beyond belief wonderful. Several staff spoke a fair amount of English, and everyone worked very hard to provide outstanding service. Massages are also available, although this isn’t obvious on the website.

Room Tip: After sleeping on a futon for several weeks we enjoyed having a bed.

We stayed here recently based on the many glowing Trip Advisor reviews and we were not disappointed. In fact, the property actually exceeded our expectations. As others have mentioned, the arrival is quite dramatic. We came by rental car which would not have been possible without GPS. The final few miles are quite narrow and winding but when you first spot the ryokan you understand why being off the beaten path is part of its appeal.

Our room (107) is listed as a Forest Suite but it actually has a full ocean view. The private hot tub just outside the room is the perfect spot to unwind and gaze out at the sea. Everything about the property is spotless and beautifully maintained. The staff is warm yet unobtrusive. We were the only Western guests during our stay but we had no communication issues as many of the staff speak excellent English.

On top of all this, the kaiseki meal we had for dinner was one of our best dining experiences in a two week Japan stay that included meals at many Michelin-starred establishments.

The Earth is a bit out of the way and it falls into the expensive category but your time here will be unforgettable. It was actually hard to drive away in the morning as we would have gladly stayed for additional nights.

One note: the hotel's website lists the property as Oyado The Earth. I'm not sure why Trip Advisor adds the extra letter to the name.

This was an amazing ryokan. The setting is breathtaking - you literally gasp when you see it the first time as you come around the cliff into the property. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The room was big, comfortable, modern, yet had a very traditional and intimate feeling. You can't beat the view of the ocean and sunrise. The food was spectacular! We also really appreciated the outdoor bath at our room.

Can't say enough about the staff - they were all incredibly kind. One of our waiters even gave us a gift because he said he enjoyed us so much.

We had an in-room shiatsu massage, which was the perfect end to a long day of sightseeing.

The Earth starts with a major advantage - the setting above the rocky coast about 12 km from Toba and surrounded by virgin forest is absolutely breathtaking. The hotel itself is an elegant and innovative reinterpretation of the ryokan. The ocean suites are spacious with a very comfortable sleeping area and a spacious sitting area plus a balcony and an outside private hot spring bath. Soaking in the hot tub with a glass of (very good) japanese whisky in hand, listening to the waves crash on the rocks below is an experience not to be missed.

Meals are served in a chic unfussy dining room and are traditional kaiseki with a lot of local seafood. The quality and variety was superb and watching dishes being prepared in the open kitchen was fascinating. Most guests were japanese and adhered to the custom of wearing a yukata to the dining room which contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere which pervaded the entire hotel.

The bar was almost empty both nights we were there but the "mixologist" produced excellent martinis and gimlets.

Toba is a little off the beaten track especially for non-japanese tourists but the great shrine at Ise is nearby and well worth visiting especially this year when the once every 20 year rebuilding has just been completed.

We (3 rooms) spent one evening at The Earth - and what an evening it was. Dining both dinner and breakfast were world class - the presentations along with the setting in the dining room were beyond compare in the world. Our rooms were western style - I don't know if they have rooms with just mats. From a hot tub soak inside to a longer soak in the outdoor tub on the balcony - watching the hawks soar just off the balcony - simply a wow. If there is a drawback - and it's minor - english is only spoked - barely by one person - however - that's not an problem. We took the hotel bus from the train station in Toba - outbound we had a large taxi take our group (5 and a guide) to Kyoto by road - making stops along the way at the shrine.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Spend 2 nights if you can.

We went to The Earth on our honeymoon and it was everything we hoped it would be. Eri, the General Manager emailed us straight after our reservation (use http://www.the-earth.in/en/ - it took me a while to find the correct website address) and even translated the menu and wine list for me.
We stayed in 2 different rooms, first the Universal Suite and then the Maisonette Suite (as neither were available 2 days in a row) The universal has the better onsen, but the Maisonette has 2 stories - 2 balconies, has a better view and is overall bigger (I think the universal suite with the bigger onsen is the better value though)
The experience in The Earth was perfect from start to finish. The staff are so lovely and really went out of their way to make our stay brilliant. The food is absolutely sensational and there is so much of it!
Make no mistake, the place isn't cheap, but the experience is first class and I would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere really special to stay.

Room Tip: Each room has a different setup. Have a look through the photos on the site to pick the right one fo...
