I was so glad that I decided to book this ryokan. It was super clean. All staff were very friendly and thoughtful. As soon as we arrived at the entrance they ran out and offered to take our bags. We were served tea while waiting to be checked in. The meals were delicious and pretty. We had two traditional Japanese breakfast (each was different), one traditional dinner, and one shabushabu served in our room. The obasan (I guess she was the chef) was very thoughtful. She introduced each dish to us very patiently (I know only a little Japanese). The gentleman who was assigned to take care of our stay was friendly, thoughtful, and helpful. He took the time to tell us about the hotel and the city. He even showed us a trip planner patiently on a map. When we decided to go out for a walk after dinner, he gave us a torch, how thoughtful! We enjoyed the public bath a lot. It was beautiful and relaxing. The bathroom and toilet inside the room was clean and convenient as well. The experience was simply terrific. I wish I could stay a few more days! It was located only 10 minutes from the Nara Park and Todaiji, and 15 minutes from Nara Kintetsu Station. We spent about US$1200 for 3 adults for 2 nights. It was so worth it because the meals, which were prepared with hearts, could have taken up half of the price already! Highly recommended!

A modern ryokan with some amazing in room facilities.

We chose an room with it's own in room Japanese style bath and extra sitting room. (Look on the Japanese version of the ryokan's web site to choose the different options for rooms with a Japanese bath.)

We had a massive sized room by Japanese standards. It was really well laid out, and with a great view of the park.

A delicious evening meal (served in our room), and caring attentive service made for a really great stay. The staff were lovely, thoughtful and good natured. Couldn't have asked for more as they looked after us really well (explained each of the dishes as they were served, took our photo, and generally pampered us).

We got some great advice on what to do and see in Nara. The hotel is located a few minutes from Nara Park, the temples and attractions. The hotel also has a small traditional onsen (separate for men and women).

This place is perfect for a couples get away.

PS Be careful what day you visit Nara as some things are closed during the week.

Room Tip: Look on the Japanese version of the ryokan's web site to choose the different options for rooms...

This was a very good Ryokan in Nara for a quite reasonable price as far as Ryokan pricing goes (the dinner and breakfast were worth more than $120, potentially $200 just for those two in some locations). They also have a onsen which was quite enjoyable.

Bed: comfy bed install on Tatami after dinner

Dinner and Breakfast are included and made out of a delicious mix of Japanese dishes (served in your room for dinner). It really was a great meal, and offset the price of the room. Breakfast is a shared room with a Japanese buffet. A nice lady helped us with chosing dishes and how to eat them best.

AC: it worked great, but the controls in the room are in Japanese

Room: more than enough space, but you sleep on Tatami (plushy and comfortable)

Noise: very quiet

Location: It is very close to Nara park and the main attractions. You can see some from the roof terrace.

Internet: wireless worked great

English: some of the staff spoke enough English, others not as much

We had a comfortable stay at the Hotel New Wakasa. It looked more modern than the Ryokan we stayed in the past. The rooms though were the traditional rooms with tatami. We booked the room with the outdoor jacuzzi. At 17000+ yen per person per night, I expected a little more luxury and comfort. The outdoor jacuzzi could only comfortably fit one person at a time. The water was kept at warm (onsen) temperature all throughout the two days we were at the ryokan so it was very relaxing at the end of a full day of walking. The view from the verandah/jacuzzi was the street and nearby houses but they put up a railing so that you could only see the mountains from the distance. They also had curtains so you could bathe in private.

The 2 dinners we had were good. We especially enjoyed the Sukiyaki dinner on the 2nd night. We were only given a choice for dinner on the second night.

One of our disappointments with the hotel was that dinner was not served in our room as they had advertised in their website. We booked two rooms and we were a group of six. I asked if it was because we were a big group. The staff said that they served dinner in the dining room as a standard. He didn't speak much English so it was hard to communicate. Finally I had to explain that it was my parents' first time to stay in a ryokan and we were looking forward to giving them the experience of having dinner in the room. Still he insisted. Finally, I showed them their website which stated that dinner was served in the room. At that point, he compromised and agreed to serve dinner in one of the rooms but only for one night. I assumed that it was really a standard to have dinner in the dining room and was wondering why they it was not communicated well in their website. I got confused later because at dinner time, I saw one of their staff bringing food to another room.

We enjoyed the view deck at the top floor of the hotel.

The ryokan was quite far from the Kintetsu station. I don't think 10mins would be enough. The hotel did not have a shuttle so we had to take a cab a couple of times.

The staff, except for one who couldn't manage a smile, were generally nice, especially the ones who attended to our meals.

The hotel is located nicely close to Nara's main attraction (or maybe because the city isn't that big?). Walking distance to Todaiji temple and several other smaller temples. From Kintetsu Nara it takes around 20 mins walking time or you may take a 5 mins taxi ride with 660 yen. Or if you take JR line, it will be about 35 mins walk or 1100 yen by cab (Nara Station). There were English-speaking staffs who are very nice, polite, and helpful. Private bath on the rooftop (indoor) can be booked with a price of 2100 yen/hr. We made good decision by booking it, a great start for a wonderful evening with a delicate dinner. Meal was great, despite a lack of personalised service as what a fine ryokan normally offers. Dinner was served in the dining room, not in the room. They have a special room for breakfast too, on the first floor. Room is not too spacious for a ryokan, but well maintained and clean. It was quite a nice experience overall.

We stayed in several places in our 10 day trip in Japan and New Wakasa was definitely the best. The room was spacious and clean. The onsen/Japanese bath was a great extra. The food both for dinner and for breakfast was great and exceeded our expectations- all sorts of beautiful, intricate, and delicious dishes. Finally, the service was top notch- from the normal expected stuff to little touches like hand towels and drinks upon arrival, offering to take photos for us without us asking, hand warmers and a free shuttle to go to the fire ceremony going on at the temple, etc. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend New Wakasa to any traveler. Reasonable price as well. Great value.

Don't be put off by the exterior or the reception area of this hotel! On arrival I thought we'd made a terrible mistake but the staff couldn't have been nicer and once they'd shown us to our room and the spa, we felt a lot happier. It's very traditional which makes it a great ryokan - tatami floors, futon beds and yukata as well as the wonderful hot spring baths. The food was also wonderful with lots of regional touches and some of the history behind the dishes was so lovely to hear about. The staff were incredibly generous with their time in explaining everything and on our second night, they served us dinner in our room which was a fantastic experience - we went for Shabu shabu!
It's 5mins to the major sites and 15mins on the bus from the station so great location.
There is quite a variation in room size so it's worth going for the larger room! The small ones are really narrow.
People often recommend doing Nara as a day trip from Kyoto but stay over as there is so much to do and it's a much slower pace than Kyoto.
