“Great base to explore Nara”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

This is a great hotel to explore the sights of Nara. We stayed for 2 nights in April 2013 and were somewhat dubious having read previous reviews but it fitted the bill perfectly. The hotel is located in the old, historic district of Nara, a short taxi ride (about 10mins; Y1000 approx.) from the main JR Nara Station. The Kintetsu Railway station is nearer the hotel; probably about a 10-15mins walk. For sightseeing, the hotels location could not be better being only about a 5mins walk from the entrance to Nara Park (we could see one of the pagoda’s from our bedroom window) and there are plenty of atmospheric Japanese restaurants (and international cuisine) located in the little side streets all around the hotel. The famous Nara Hotel is also only a 5mins walk away – a good spot for some pre-dinner cocktails or sumptuous afternoon tea! To sample the local specialty, Okonomiyaki, you can’t beat ‘Parco’ restaurant right opposite the hotel.
We stayed in a double room, which was adequate in size altough the bathroom was very compact! But, everything is clean with Shisheido toiletries in the bathroom. Free WiFi was also included. The breakfast buffet offered a good range of both Japanese and Western dishes and all the hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming; happy to give sightseeing advice and dinner recommendations.
Overall, for location and price, I think the Hotel Sunroute Nara is a great choice.

The hotel is located far from the Nara Station...as per Nara standards but next to the main tourist attractions of Nara. Its a small neat hotel ideal for short stays. The rooms are small and bathrooms smaller...if you are above six feet....the loo use could be a problem. Has free wifi and all basic amenities in the room. Comfortable stay, recommended only if staying for a day or two.

I stayed here for five nights while on a business trip. Service was friendly and helpful at the front desk and in the restaurant. The included Japanese/Western buffet breakfast was good and food items were replaced by the staff often. However, the bedrooms are very small. There was barely room for the bed and except for a few clothes hangers on the wall there was no where to store clothes. I did appreciate having a small refrigerator in the room. The WiFi worked well in the room. The hotel was very clean, modern and well maintained. The front desk staff can supply a WiFi router and password. While the Nara hotel is the place to stay if you can afford it, the Sunroute Nara is a good alternate choice if you are on a budget. It is centrally located, near many shops and restaurants, and the Nara Park is just 10 minutes walk away from the hotel.

Very safe location - probably this can be said for most locations in the charming city of Nara. Hotel in easy walking distance from Nara Park and the retail area. The rooms are very small and the bathroom even smaller. Beds adequate but firm pillows hard! Breakfast - limited selection. Nicely presented breakfast room with special private areas for small groups. Internet available in lobby with occasional availability in our room - 405.

Nice hotel in a safe area; nothing fancy but a good place to spend the night. Hotel is about a 12 minute walk from the JR Nara Station; a 5 minute walk to Nara Park (where the wild deer & all the Unesco World Heritage Sites are); and you will pass numerous shopping & dining opportunities in between the train station & the hotel site. Reservation was booked at hotel website -- hotel will ask you to confirm booking before arrival.

Hotel is a little dated - looking (think early 80's/ late '70's), but clean and in a quiet area. Hotel staff are friendly (but may have some difficulty with speaking English -- just don't ask for anything too complicated & you'll be fine). Breakfast buffet is optional/ extra charge, but is wonderful -- Japanese & American choices available.

Stayed in a non-smoking room with 2 twin beds -- good size for 2 people (Japanese rooms are smaller than Western hotel rooms). VERY small bathroom, but equipped with high-tech toilet and deep bathtub. Yukata, slippers, and some very orange towels are provided along with self-service tea. (Amusing "Disinfected" labels on everything)

First, the location is fantastic if you want to see the temples and shrines in Nara Park or even stroll down the pedestrian shopping streets and a 15 minute walk to the Todaiji Temple. Service was excellent. There was always someone behind the desk who spoke English. The room was average in size for Japanese hotels, the bathroom larger than some. Housekeeping service was excellent with fresh towels and sheets every day. Cabled internet service is provided in the room at no extra charge, just ask at the desk to borrow a cable. There is also a computer in the lobby for email and web access. Breakfast is extra but reasonable, about 1250 yen, in their beautiful restaurant and what a spread! Of course the typical Japanese breakfast which I am beginning to appreciate, but also scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, toast, French toast, rolls, fruit and plain yogurt. And of course, coffee and tea. We definitely enjoyed our time there and will book this hotel again when we visit Nara in the future.

  • Liked — Friendly helpful service, great location, excellent breakfast, free internet service
  • Disliked — No complaints
