Owner description: Montgomery Place, a serene reflection of nearly 200 years of continuous family stewardship, is best known as a landscape influenced by the great Andrew Jackson Downing and an architectural landmark designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. But the totality of the estate - house, gardens, arboretum, woodlands, orchards, hamlet, and natural features - makes it a unique American treasure. The 380-acre property is an amazingly intact example of Hudson Valley estate life. Each of the estate's features has a story to tell about changing American attitudes toward nature, landscape, and home design over time.

Nice grounds for a lovely old home. Cute little hiking trails. Nice place to picnic with gorgeous views.

We almost didn't visit this property, but I'm glad we did. Highly recommend the walk to the falls--they were running high and fast after rains and were awesome. A real Catskills/Hudson River Valley experience without much exertion. Great photo opps. There are two paths to choose from. We went down the woodland trail. Well marked, mulched, but steeper of the two. We walked up the old road. We lingered at the falls where they have placed benches. What a great spot! Oh, and the view from the mansion porch with its wicker furniture isn't too bad either. Didn't go in the house, so can't comment on that. Quiet place. Great view of fields and farmland.

Grounds , house and garden very pleasant and easy to manage. Near Bard College and Poet's Walk which you could do in a day. All on the Hudson!!!!

I highly recommend the house tour and suggest you verify the tour schedule in advance of your visit. Then, plan ahead to allow time to walk from the parking lot to the front door of the mansion where the tour starts (it took us ten minutes.) Next to the parking lot is a visitors center and / or gift shop not currently in use, but the rest rooms were open.

If you arrive early for a tour, you can explore the grounds and gardens, hike down to a waterfall (about 15 minutes one-way), or sit on one of the lovely porches and gaze at the view.

This is not your typical historic home furnished with “period” furniture from elsewhere. The furnishings, paintings, and objects stayed with the home. The tour focuses on the generations of occupants and how they viewed and modified Montgomery Place, and makes things all come together.

Walking through these grounds, you really get a sense of times past. Magnificent grounds, and wonderful view of the Hudson River from behind the mansion.
