Although locals mostly still recognize the name Onjo-ji Temple, it is universally referred to as the Mii-dera Temple (Temple of Three Wells). Every time I used the old name, I was corrected. We were in Otsu on other business & decided to tour this Temple. "Temple" does not refer to a specific building, but to the entire complex of about 40 buildings. This is one of Japan's 4 largest temples. It dates back to 672 but repeatedly has been destroyed by fire & rebuilt, The most interesting of the old buildings was the Golden Hall (Kondo), filled with many exotic exhibits. Next to it is the Bell Tower ( a small shed?) containing the famous evening bell. The library is also impressive. We paid $3 extra to tour the modern museum featuring silk screen panels from about 1600.

This temple is high up on the hillside, giving a great view over Otsu and Lake Biwa, you can really get a feel for just how scenic and beautiful Shiga is from up here! The temple itself is a great building as well, and around the area there are many smaller temples and structures to see, including a massive bell house and pagoda, as well as another large temple hall / museum.

This is also a great place for sakura viewing, and very few tourists come here, making it very relaxed and peaceful. Toward the end of March the trees around the temple were also illuminated, making it a great site from below.

Quite a nice walk walking around the temple. Must be really pretty during autumn. My favorite spot would be the top which you can see lake and mountain view.
