The highlight of this temple is the giant Buddha. You can find it on the first floor. Do not just look at the Buddha but walk behind it. The sign is only in Japanese but you are free to go behind it. It is a special experience (although not suitable for claustrophobic people maybe).

Also the rest of the temple is worth visiting.

This Temple was located right in the middle of a bustling street. However, inside you couldn't hear anything outside. It was so peaceful. The tall pagoda is a symbol of Fukuoka and the giant wooden Buddha is a must see. I had a lovely time there and would definitely recommend a visit if in the area.

Although Fukuoka is a big bustling Japanese city (the biggest on the island of Kyushu), there is an oasis of calm and tranquility in the temple area which is only a short walk from Hakata station. There are beautiful tranquil gardens, raked gravel, a red pagoda and the highlight is the Buddha in the Tochoji Temple. Unfortunately you can't take photos but for the price of a candle and a couple of incense sticks (sold by a fairly grumpy old lady) you can see the amazing Buddha and get to take the walk from hell to heaven.

This charming temple complex was worth the visit....a quiet respite from the noisy street in front. It was an easy walk 10 minute from the JR station, Hakata en route to Canal City. The large buddha is known as "Fukuoka Daibutsu" (Great Buddha of Fukuoka) and was completed in 1992 so not as old as some buddha statues but still impressive at 33 feet high!
To the left of the Buddha is a passageway that starts out in a lit area with wall paintings of what might happen in HELL; then a very, very black passageway that leads to "HEAVEN". Though pitch dark, there is a handrail to guide you. IF you find the bell and ring it, good luck will come your way. The exit takes you back to the Buddha and light! The garden is lovely as are many of the other buildings in the complex.

The highlight of Tochoji is its Giant Buddha, which is about 10.8m high. It doesn't have the history of other places like in Nara or Kamakura, but it's free and easy to get to (take Exit #1 at the Gion Subway Stn). In addition there is a new pagoda, prayer area, and small historical graveyard of 3 feudal lords from the 17-18th centuries.
The surprising thing is how unknown this place is to most tour books, self-proclaimed experts, and even Japanese living nearby. It is never crowded and no tourist horde to deal with.
It did have an infamous Photo Nazi lady, always watching you and vehemently pushing its no photography policy of the Great Buddha, but most recently she was not there. The same asinine policy still is though unfortunately, however it's not so in your face as before. You can now see the whole place on Youtube.
This place is well worth a visit if you have time. Be sure to tour the hell cave behind the Buddha.
