“Fantastic location and service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2013

I spent the last two nights of Chinese New Year at the Okura in Fukuoka (Hakata). Location is the best in town, both from the airport, train stations and attractions walking distance. Service was impecable, matching a luxury 5 star hotel. Rooms and quality of food, very good.

Room Tip: Mind there are smoking floors, so if you are a non smoker, ask for the non smoking floors.

Large, comfortable hotel, right on a subway stop. Easy walk to convention center and Tenjin. Rooms are very clean, modern, and the staff is very attentive. Only LAN in rooms, so if your computer only can use wireless you need to go to lobby. The hotel could use some more common seating areas. Overall, very happy with my choice of hotel in Fukuoka.

We stayed for 7 nights as part of a sport tour, excellent very comfortable room with just everything you need. Very polite and helpful staff. Perfect lobby, large and lots of lounges just ideal for sitting and meeting up with people. The hotel has everything bars, restaurants, a pool, gym, function rooms and would suit anyone's holiday or conference.

We stayed for 4 nights and we were so impressed, nice room, great service and excellent location which is very convenient travel by subway and there're only 2 stations for Hakata and also close to Tenjin underground shopping area. I highly recommend to people who still making decision where to stay in Fukuoka.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2012

Stayed here for two days from 4/16-4/18/2012. Rooms are on the smaller side as are most hotel rooms in Japan but was actually one of the larger rooms I've stayed in while in Japan. Decor, furniture and look was very modern and sleek. Rooms were spotless and I enjoyed the ammenities such as a regrigerator in the room. Hotel staff were very accomodating, called for extra bath towels and they were delivered within 5-10 minutes. The lobby area was really exquisite and the breakfast buffet at the downstairs restaurant was good. The best part about this hotel that I enjoyed was the location. There is a convenience store steps outside the back entrance which was convenient for buying bottled water and snacks for the room. Also the subway station is located right behind the hotel and Hakata Station is only two stops away on the subway, very very convenient. Also there are lots of nearby restaurants with delicious foods and also many shops such as the Don Quihote discount store which is also located across the street in the the back of the hotel. Overall, a beautiful hotel with its location being its greatest asset. I highly recommend.

We stayed at the Fukuoka Okura for several nights while attending a conference so did not have a choice since the sponsor chose and booked the place. Bluntly, it’s a fusty old-fashioned hotel exuding Japan’s version of elegance circa 1987. If you liked the bubble economy years and are a 62 year old upper middle class Japanese “lady who lunches”, you will love the retro vibe, freakishly high prices and many excess to requirement bowing staff. It is clean, the elevators work well, it is fairly central, and yes, there are always those many sweet bowing people.
OK, in the real world of 2012 this would be a fine three-star Hampton Inn (Hilton’s mid market brand aimed at the cost-conscious US corporate traveler) in the Japanese version of Tampa. The rooms are, well…exactly Hampton Inn, except the bathroom is small and old-fashioned and the only nod to 1990’s technology is a short LAN cord. No wireless here. Hampton Inns are better. No coffee in room. A $5 charge for a small bottle of water. Really zero extras. The TV offers three non-Japanese stations: CNN, Chinese and Korean – not unusual in Japan but odd for a hotel which purports to be one of the best in one of the country’s main international entry ports. Oh yes, the health club is a snappy US$40+ extra for each use. Breakfast in the Japanese restaurant was average by Japanese standards but elegantly served by kimono-clad waitresses. The “western” breakfast was a profuse Japanese-oriented buffet. The only downside was a head waiter who always did the teeth-sucking thing and declared it “muzukoshi” to find the two of us a table in the half-empty restaurant at 7am each morning…still not sure what was so difficult.

The absurd thing is the pretense that this is a five star offering. They actually attempt to charge US$300+ a night when you can get a lovely room nearby for a third of the price nearby. As we checked out, we were hit by a US$150 a night “spouse conference surcharge” (on top of the US$200 already paid). Apparently two people make a significantly greater impact on a rather small functional room with a tiny bathroom than one. Japan is a fabulous country to travel around, but this Hotel exemplifies the almost comic inflexibility that led to the bubble’s bursting and the country’s current economic malaise. There is a reason that Okura hotels survive barely… only in Japan.

This hotel - and the town of Fukuoka - is something of a curiousity. Whilst it should "by rights" be a provincial back water, Fukuoka is a town with ideas above its station which actually manages to live up to its pretensions. The hotel can be loosely grouped within a series of modern developments along the river, culminating in Canal City south of the hotel.

Our room was large and fully featured. The hotel has a whole floor dedicated to, as to one half, weddings and, as to the other half, a health and fitness club. There is an entire chapel "in the sky" with its own extensive gardens on the wedding side of things, and an adjoining pool and spa for ensuring that wedded bliss is spent more in health than in sickness. Use of the pool is very expensive indeed (from what I remember, around £20/US$40 per person per visit for use of the pool and jacuzzi only).

I felt the atmosphere of the hotel was a little snooty. There is nothing specific I can point to to substantiate this - it is just my (possibly unfair) perception. At the end of the day, it only cost me £80 (US$160) for two to stay one night which is truely a bargain for a place of this high standard (and certainly not a level where one would expect snooty to be making an appearance).

Canal City is a true highlight of Fukuoka. Essentially an indoor/outdoor mall, when we went in mid-November it was decorated with the most impressive Christmas decorations I have yet seen. At its centre was a huge, suspended 3D "paper" snow crystal, with dancing fountains in the background.
