Interesting mall with a ramen stadium and a variety of eateries to choose from suitable for young and old and from Japanese cuisine to international cuisine. The main mall has nothing much in my opinion as it's just like a normal departmental stall with small boutique shops of local brands. What was interesting was the wing with international brands (h&m, Zara) and a 3 storey Uniqlo and 2 storey franc franc. There is also a Daiso there for knick knacks shopping and a local snack/gift shop that sells just about any local snack or pastry for you to buy back home. Apart from the ramen in the ramen stadium, a hidden gem is actually the ramen found on the food floor on level 1, next to Saboten. I found it to be the best in Fukuoka! Oh they had free stroller rental service as well which was good for my boy to take his afternoon nap.

We had some time to kill before going to the airport so we stowed our suitcases in the Hakata train station lockers and hoofed it a mile to Canal City. The Mall is huge, 3-4 buildings that do not necessarily interconnect so make sure you use the interactive maps (in English) to see what stores and restaurants they offer. The middle of the mall has a huge fountain and light show set to the music from the Pirates of the Carribean and for five minutes it is definitely entertaining. We caught it from the 4th floor. The mall is partially outdoors so bring warm outerwear since in Nov it was cold. We had dinner at Umaya, a yakitori place on the 3rd floor and it was delicious!

Put on your walking shoes cause this mall is 5 floors huge! Nice water attraction in the middle, gives you an excuse to sit and rest your feet for a few minutes. Visit raumen stadium, lots of places to choose from.

In my opinion Canal City suffers from a bit of an identity crisis and seems a strange cross between a poor man's Disneyland & a big city mall. No doubt it will appeal to loads of people but personally the wife & I couldn't wait to get out of there & back into the little ally ways with quaint shops, eateries with real personality that draw people like me to Hakata and other Kyushu towns.

After escaping Canal City we crossed the road & disappeared into the laneways looking for an old fashioned Izakaya where we could enjoy a delicious meal, a cold drink, socialise with the locals and to really enjoy that 'Japan Experience'. We followed that up with visiting a clothing shop and getting some Jimbei (Japanese pyjamas), which were actually made in Kyushu.

It is another mall, but the ramen city upstairs is good for trying different types of ramen, makes it very convenient. I took the 100-yen Green bus from Hakata station, and it stopped right in front of the mall, so it was quite convenient. Even by taxi, it cost 500 yen to get back to Hakata station, so it is also affordable if you travel in a group.

The TV-screen display at the entrance of the mall was pretty interesting though.
