“Huge shopping mall with special shops”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2014 via mobile

On our second last day of our trip, we finally made it to Canal City Mall and parked our car in the mall multi-storey car park.

As we were not craze for shopping, we didn't expect much. However, surprisingly, my beloved found the small Moomin Cafe and we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea there. There were big stuffed Moomin characters sitting right beside you and even though I am not a fan of Moomin, I enjoyed sitting there for a cup of cappuccino. Before we left, we also bought some souvenirs from the shop inside the cafe.

If you are fans of Studio Ghibli and Jump animations like I am, you will also be happy to find their shops in this mall where I was happy to buy limited edition studio ghibli DVDs and special edition jump comics products.

The mall is huge with cinema and musical water fountains where you can definitely spend hours there.

“So much to see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Canal City has tons of shops to choose from, spread out among 5 different floors and 3 different buildings. We visited twice and still didn't have a chance to see everything. The Raumen Stadium on the top floor of the main buildings is a great place to sample the famed Hakata Ramen. The bottom floor is where the fountain show takes place and during our visit, they also had several "splash zone" areas for kids to run around in and get wet. I'd read somewhere that the mall was outdated but it didn't seem the case to me, I found it lively and entertaining and so did the kids.

“Easy place to spend a day shopping and eating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Maybe it just seems like the Japanese love to eat and shop all the time. There were many cute shops that sold a lot of goods that Hakatans love. Watching the children at the water zone was immensely entertaining.

“Very large mall at the gateway to Asia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

They seem to build everything "big" in Hakata. Canal City is no exception. It is a very large mall with anchors such as Uniqlo, Llaox, Coach, Zara, Benetton, Muji, and Ramen Stadium. It is the picture of the new, large mega-type malls appearing in Japan.

“Great dining and shopping complex”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2014

Family traveling with 2 girls. 9 & 12: We stayed at the Grand Hyatt connected to Canal City. We enjoyed shopping, playing and dining here. There were sales in all stores (August). Our girls enjoyed the hourly water show, Moomin Cafe, and the photo booths / arcade in Taito Station. The first floor is set up for kids with shops, McDonalds and kiddy land. We enjoyed the sushi conveyor belt, tempura and tonkatsu restaurants. Ramen Stadium is also here. Tried 3 different ones- all good but we especially liked the ramen from the nightly yatai stalls that pop up nearby along the canal 7pm-?. Catch 100Y bus here from Tenjin or Hakata station.
