We wanted a getaway from the city life in Fukuoka and Nokonoshima Island came to mind.
From Gion Station in Hakata, we took the train and alighted at Meinohama Station in under 20
minutes. From there just walk out and hop on another bus to the Meinohama ferry port.
Alternatively take bus number 312 to the ferry port directly. But service starts from 9+ onwards.
Ferry service took under 15 minutes to reach the beautiful island. You can rent a bicycle to cycle around the island but certain places are out of bounds to cyclists. So we rented a bike to cycle to Island Park which is all the way to the northern tip of the island. ¥1000 yen for the whole day.
It was a peaceful and tranquil ride but it's mostly upslope all the way. We ended up pushing the bike on steeper slopes. The map wasn't very well signposted for the cycling route. So we gave up thinking it was a long way to go.
The ride down was lovely as we didn't have to peddle at all. Stopped by the ferry area for ice cream inside the small restaurant. Never had such creamy and refreshing ice cream. The texture felt like powdered snow. The Noko burger was freshly made with juicy beef sandwiches between two light and soft buns. Those elderly aunties are very friendly and try to understand our limited "sumimasen wakanimasen"
Only grouse we had was that the time table printed on the tourist map was inaccurate. Missed the bus to Island Park and had to take a taxi instead.
Once inside the park, the landscaping took our breadth away. It was the season of hydrangeas. Even the trees were well trimmed.
We walked towards the feeding area for rabbits and goats and saw lovely wild flowers on a slope. It's like gerberras bursting with a myriad of colours, overlooking the deep blue sea.
There's even a swing made from bamboo poles, sturdy enough for adults to have a go at it! Totally relaxing for the mind and great day out for family with toddlers and teenagers!
Reward yourself with a bowl of piping hot beef udon, situated in a tranquil environment. If time permits, there's a clay making and painting place nearby.
You can stretch your trip by going to the beach which we missed. Ran all the way down fr Island park to the ferry point to catch the ferry back to mainland.
Lovely day trip for family and couples. Make sure you plan your transport connection well as the interval between each bus and ferry ride can be an hour apart.
