Japanese Ryokan Kashima Honkan
Ranked #101 of 193 Hotels / Ryokan in Fukuoka
Reviewed 8 December 2012

Entirely OK, not new at all, ryokan. Decent ambiance, friendly people running the place.
I could sleep pretty well there; together, the tatami mats and the futon were soft enough
(which was not always the case elsewhere in Japan) to make sleep pleasant. Nice air; quiet.

8-10 minutes walk from the Hakata JR station (Shinkansen), 14 to the other downtown (in the "Fukuoka part" of town). Anyways, it is close to a metro station (and some temples) if you need that. Of course, toilets are only public toilets.

All in all a decent place and a "soft" and nice introduction to Japanese ryokans (futon on floor soft enough; owners/management speak good English). Although I prefer toilets in my room, I might well go back here if fate brings me to Fukuoka on another occasion.

Perfect base to visit Fukuoka. Nice big rooms, all with a touch of tradition. Closets with antiques and wooden parquets. Nice public bath. We ddn't experience the breakfast but we saw it's served in a big common room, typical of many ryokans. During our stay many Japanese students were there also making it lively and even more local. Obviously if guests are noisy it can be an issue, given the thin wooden walls.
Perfect location, walking distance from the Koshida shrine and Canal City.

This was a good experience, it seemed genuin with lots of Japanese guests. The rooms were big and well equipped and sleeping mats comfy. The bathing area cool, but overall it was pretty warn around the edges, but it was cheaper too than other places.

This place is an old Japanese ryokan, so if you want a genuine Japanese experience this is a good place to stay.
We had a large room, with both a Japanese and a western style table.
It was spacy so we could easily put away our suitcases where they were not in our way.
There was a fridge, we had a Japanese style garden right outside our big windows and yukata was provided. The house is old and you could tell from some parts of the room, but it didn’t bother us.

Downsides:
*noisy
*thin futon
*no W.C./shower in the room
*no Wi-Fi in the room (you had to go down to the lobby)
*no elevator (we lived on the 2nd floor and the stairs were really steep)
*no water boiler for tea/cup nudles

As a real style ryokan there was a common bath (separated men/women)
On the 1st floor there were 2 washing machines (200 yen)
There were 2 conv.stores nearby; 7eleven and FamilyMart, and also a good café/pasta place called Pronto.
15 min walk to the yatai area.
10-15 min walk from Hakata Station.

As for the price we lived cheaper elsewhere with W.C./shower in our room, good Wi-Fi, no noise and thicker futon... But it wasn't awfully expensive.

This Ryokan is great value for money, in a traditional wooden building with public baths, not far from the central station with easy access to the subway. It has a little Japanese courtyard in the middle. We had a large tatami mat room with futons on sleep on. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was clean, comfy and safe, with plenty of space to spread out, and Internet terminals by reception.

It smelt a little smoky in the common areas, though the hotel was well ventilated. The walls are pretty thin (as is common in traditional houses like this one) and the floorboards a little creaky, so you might hear you neighbours, but it was never a bother for us.

This Ryokan has bags of character and we thoroughly enojoyed our stay.

I only stayed one night here but wished i had stayed more.
Its location is central and walking distance from the Jr station so next time i visit, i will use it as a base to see the neigbourhing prefectures.
The room is spotless, big, well apointed and comes in autumn with a kotatsu under the table (i loved this). I had to share the share to common bathroom as i had no toilets nor bathroom in my room but it was not a problem for me.
I had ordered only Japanese breakfast and was served in the spacious reception room overlooking the little garden. It was delicious !
The owners are friendly and speak really good English.
I definitely recommend this place !

Traditional Japanese-style ryokan. Take off your shoes when you enter and put on the slippers. Big, long creaky hallways, but clean and comfy. Very friendly owner and night manager - both speak a little bit of English.

ROOM. Stayed in one of the family rooms. Very roomy. Air conditioning, television with a dozen or so Japanese channels, mini-fridge, yukata robes. No ensuite bathroom, but there are shared showers/toilets - lots of them around the ryokan.

INTERNET. Two shared computers up front, but they're not available after midnight. Wireless internet is available in most of the building, but the signal doesn't reach the very back of the ryokan.

LOCATION. Terrific location. Right near the Kushida Shrine. Walking distance to the main train station, Canal City, and subway. Convenience stores very close by.

VERDICT. Fukuoka can be a pricey city to sleep in, but this Ryokan was very reasonably priced.
