“Better Than Expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2014

I went on a last minute impromptu trip from Korea to Kagoshima and this was the only available hotel during the last week of December, 2013.

The exterior is uninspiring so I didn't expect much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We had a 4th floor room facing the river with two twin beds. Room was a good size for Japan. The bed was comfortable but they only give you one pillow, with no spares. The room, bathroom, and all linens are kept very clean. They provide a universal recharger (capable of recharging an ipod, android and windows phones), a nice-smeling spray for clothes, two hair dryers, and a yukata for bed, which is thoughtful.

I don't speak any Japanese and the staff had limited English but were very willing to be of service. The front desk was very well stocked with detailed local maps and tourist information flyers.

The hotel is within 5 minutes' walking distance to the Kagoshima Chuo Station and the big shopping mall (Amu Plaza), 10 minutes' walk from Tenmonkan (main shopping area with lots of eateries and other shops), and a 15 minute walk from the Meiji History Museum. Despite the central location, it's super quiet.

We had the mainly Japanese food breakfast buffet at Shangri-la each morning and found it very nice.

Kagoshima has fancy onsen resort hotels that do take day visitors but I opted for the Nishida Onsen, for which this hotel has discount coupons, which is run by very friendly and ancient Japanese ladies. It serves as a sort of local bathhouse, used a lot by the local people. It was super affordable, a bit run down, but charming and spic and span, with great onsen water. Ask at the front desk for the map there, and be sure to take your own toiletries (the onsen provides lockers, a towel, a coin operated hair dryer and nothing else).

I stayed three nights and was very satisfied with the quality of the hotel given its relatively low price

Excellent location, situated next to Daiei Supermarket, and connected by an underpass to a shopping centre from across the road, with food-court, another supermarket, Muji-brand Japanese clothing and lifestyle-living concept store, with Uniglo parallel to it.
when one emerges from the left of the hotel lobby, walked pass a narrow street, and one would not miss the bustling crowd of Japanese-working class adults dining at the local watering holes.
On the ground-floor, its café-breakfast restaurant, called Shangri-La, shows its diners were mainly tourists from Singapore and Taiwan. It serves a decent spread of mainly western and Japanese-breakfast food.

Room Tip: Try the local Japanese-pub & watering hole, which was crowded on night when we were there with t...

Excellent location, a few minutes from the train station with lots of dining choices nearby.

Modern hotel with tiny rooms. Room was musty smelling and very hot, and the windows do not open for ventilation. Nice view along the river though .

Good bathroom with an excellent shower. Minimal English TV programs

Excellent Japanese buffet breakfast, poor selection of western breakfast items.

There must be better choices in Kagoshima!

This less-than-average Japanese business hotel near the train station should not be confused with the Tokyu Hotel, also reviewed on this site. This hotel has tiny rooms, unfriendly staff, does not offer free breakfast or even free coffee, and costs double the price of comparable - or better - Japanese business hotels. The internet worked only sporadically the two nights I stayed there and the lobby bar was always closed.

  • Liked — It is located near the train station.
  • Disliked — Quite expensive for a tiny room with few amenities.
