We spent 3 nights in Aso and loved it. On our first day, the crater wasn't open due to gas emissions and wind direction but this didn't matter. Although busy at the cable car and the museum, if you enjoy walking you can get away from the crowds, see some wonderful scenery and even some wildlife. We were surprised how quiet the walking trails were and, if you enjoy walking, it is a relatively easy walk around a few dormant craters including Furunomiike crater and up to Kijmadake (1321m) with great views over the main crater. A couple of days later we went back and the active crater was open so we walked up (about 10mins from the cable car stop). It was brilliant, you could see the sulphur but couldn't smell a thing! Wonderful scenery too!
