After visiting several cities in Japan, four of us visited Mount Aso in May 2014. Overall this volcano was one of the highlights of our entire Japan trip and is my first visit to a volcano. The volcano is one of the largest caldera volcanos in the world. You can drive right to the top of it and look in the crater. When we were there the lake had evaporated, so it was steaming quite a bit (the next stage is a mud eruption). Very few people ever get to go so close to an active smoking volcano, so I highly recommend it! The tourist shop also sells a nice handbook giving helicopter views of the whole area.
