“Great Hotel if visiting Kumamoto”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

The hotel is perfectly situated for exploring the vast and famous Kumamoto castle. It's also located in the city center with shops and restaurants.

The hotel itself is modern and sports spacious rooms even by western standards. Many rooms if not all have views of the castle lit up at night. The design interior is slightly influenced by "castle" motif. There is an enlarged sketch by Akiro Kurosawa in the lobby of a scene in one of his movies where Kumamoto Castle was used as the model. It's quite spectacular to look at, and the hotel did a great job displaying this magnificent piece of Kuosawa-san's imagination. Not to be missed if you are a fan of his movies.

The top floor has a small, but fancy french restaurant 6 tables?) with a small, posh bar. The ground floor has a typical Japanese large bar "El Dorado" with couches and tables. The wine/liquor list in the bar was top notch.

The spacious rooms have all the amenities expected. There is no wireless internet, but each room has a LAN cable connection. Ask for a cable from the desk if needed.

The breakfast was top notch - choice of western or Japanese. Portions are generous.

I did not attempt to communicate in English, so I cannot comment on their skills here. I imagine like most hotels deep inside Japan away from Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto regions, you can get by if you are well traveled with a pleasant polite smile, some patience, and a few Japanese words.

If staying here more than a day, in addition to the castle, be sure and make a strip to Mount Aso - one of the largest active volcano caldera's on the planet. We rented a car and drove up there - it's about 10 by 15 miles wide and at least one vent with steam coming out. It's an experience.

The hotel was prompt at delivering everything we asked for to the room. No waiting.

For our expectations, this hotel hit everything high and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a castle view.

We stayed for 2 nights in a type A double. The hotel is simple but very convenient for a quick stopover to visit the castle. They have a parking garage available for a moderate fee. Overall it was good value. One main drawback for us was that there was no computer available for guests to use however.

Our room was very small, with barely enough room for the double bed, chair and table, but very clean and well lit with 2 windows overlooking an open parking lot. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was also rather small, but had a combination shower and tub with decent hot water pressure.

The service was very good; there was also at least one front desk staff who spoke good English and was able to make dinner reservations and give useful directions and advice. The hotel is located in a quiet but interesting neighborhood with some fashionable bars, small boutiques and good restaurants within walking distance. The castle entrance is a 10 minute walk away. The top floor bar also has a lovely view of the castle, but be advised that the castle footlights were turned off at 11pm the night we went, so try to arrive before then. If you’re planning to stay longer than one or two nights, you may want to consider reserving a larger category room.

I had the privilige to have called this place "home" on three different occasions. 1.) July/August 2003 for 3 weeks. 2.) November 2003 for 3 weeks. 3.) February 2004 for 3 weeks. This hotel is very clean...comfy... Some people who work there can speak some English, but it wasn't hard understanding you vice versa. The hotel is located in a great location. Very close walk to lots of shopping...the downtown area, and just down the street from the beautiful Kumamoto Castle. Always a taxi in the front of the hotel to take you where you want to go. Very short walk to the city's trolley as well. I believe it was a 30-40 minute ride via taxi from the Kumamoto Airport. I would definately stay here again...service was excellent.
