“Large garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2014

If you have time after the castle, check this place out. Also owned by the Hosokawa clan. Reflects how powerful and wealthy they were to have such a large garden for leisure

“Interesting Park”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014

The park is meant as a reconstruction of the old road from Kyoto to Tokyo (Edo), and thus contains scenes along the way, such as Mt Fuji and Fushimi Inari shrine. A very calming park that presents several lovely photo opportunities.

“Ver relaxing and tranquil”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

We took a long stroll around this garden. I loved all of the odd shapes of the trees in contrast to the landscaping. We spend time feeding the carp which was a fab experience. There is a traditional tea room where we were able to look out over the gardens and have some green tea and a sweet. Really worth a visit, very relaxing and beautiful.

“A marvel of tranquility and beauty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2014

We went there by streetcar right form the Nikko hotel, a ery convenient connection. The marvelously landscaped garden dates back many centuries and was originally built for the local ruling family. There is even a miniature Mt. Fuji embedded among the goyo matsu (pine trees) and ponds.
The garden has many plum trees which were in full blossom in February. The pond had many beautiful Koi, some of them golden. A shinto shrine with a passageway of about 20 Torii painted in red leaves a lasting impression.

A lovely garden, well worth the effort to reach it. Best reached by tram.
Plan on spending about half an hour or so there.
