“A nice resort property by the beach”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

I had a two-night stay here in May 2014 on business. To be honest it's not a great location if you have things to do in town, but I enjoyed my stay. I'm a regular platinum member.

The good

-It's a large impressive property. Feels a bit like something that was built in the bubble years but it's been maintained well.
-Very quiet, nice views.
-It's in the Seagaia resort complex, with golf, parks, and activities.
-Staff were very friendly and helpful with information, and very professional checking in and out.
-Received an upgrade to a very nice suite (Grand Ocean Suite) eventually.
-As a plat, check in is at the concierge desk off to one side of the front desk.
-The 40F lounge has great views.

The bad

-Transportation is a bit of a problem. The hotel is on the beach 15km from the town centre. There is bus service to/from Miyazaki station, bus service to/from the airport only on weekends and public holidays, and the nearest train station is 3km away. There were no taxis at the station when I arrived, so I walked, but you would not want to do that with bags or if it was hot. I think the best option to get from the airport to the hotel on a weekday is taking the train to Miyazaki Station then the bus from stop number 2 outside the station, but the hotel did not tell me about this option when I contacted them.
-The hotel hadn't upgraded me at all when I checked in, even though the hotel was basically empty the week after Golden Week. I insisted nicely, but they didn't have any non-smoking rooms. Eventually we decided to go and check out a smoking suite, which was fine (no smell at all, and I'm a fairly picky ex-smoker). So it ended up fine but I don't like having to argue with hotels about the upgrades they should be providing anyway...
-There is literally nothing for miles. Food options ranged from pricey to extortionate on-site, although there is a shop in the basement that sells snacks and drinks, and a cafe with reasonable coffee and bakery products.
-This was the only SPG hotel in Japan that made me choose between points, breakfast, and access to the onsen as the plat amenity. All the others I have been to give you both points and breakfast. A bit disappointing in that regard.
-The lounge on the 40th floor is tiny and has limited options (bottled beer, soft drinks, coffee from a machine) and snacks (cookies, nuts).

Overall

I needed to be in town for meetings, so the location wasn't great for me. On the other hand the room was fantastic, and the resort seemed like a great place for a family trip. I'm thinking of bringing my family down for a proper holiday at some point.

Basically if you plan around the transport or hire a car, and don't need to leave the hotel, this would be a good place to stay.

I hope they try a bit harder with the platinum amenities in the future (especially upgrades), and the lounge could do with a bit more substance, but other than that a good stay.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for choosing Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort for your recent stay.

We first of all apologize about the inconvenience of transportation and insufficient guidance which should have been
more professional.
We also deeply apologize that our explanation and support was not enough to satisfy you as our valued SPG Platinum guest.
Regarding the pointed respects by you, we promise to share them with the related sections for a future improvement.

In terms of location of the hotel, because we are located in the suburb, it creates inconvenience for you on an access from
the center of town or Miyazaki Airport.
Meanwhile, it is an honor for us to show you the outstanding ocean view from a room, and peaceful and abundant nature
lying in around 12 kilometer-long pine forest spreading in a north-south direction.
Regarding the lounge on the 40th floor, a renovation is being reviewed in order to match guests' requirements.

Continuous improvement and ingenuity will be a challenge but we intend to take action in order to provide nicer facilities and
services to help guests experience more than their expectation.

We all associates hope we serve you in future again.
In closing, we appreciate you posting and giving the precious feedback.

Sincerely yours,

Stayed 2 nights in the middle of HANAMI (sakura blossom). ...Somewhat separated from the center of Miyazaki and the airport but it is not a problem if have or rent a car.... Perfect hot springs with rotenbro (open sky baths) inside an authentic Japanese garden surrounded by Japanese-style buildings... Tasty washoku (Japanese cousins) restaurants... Friendly and helpful personal... Magnificent ocean view...

Room Tip: Japanese rooms on the 7th floor but the best view is above floor 20

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for your recent stay with us.
We are pleased to hear we could satisfy you by providing with the features.

Spring time, especially the period for cherry blossoms, is the nicest time to spend all over Japan.

You can expect, in a sense, a different atmosphere of the resort from the time you visited us before.
From now through the summer, each hotel of our resort is going to open a swimming pool outside.
You can visit the Zoo near here to enjoy their Lazy River Pool with the slide as well.

We hope to be able to serve you again in future.
Hopefully, Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort will become your choice for your stay again.

Lastly we deeply appreciate your feedback.

Sincerely yours,

Because of its mild climate Miyazaki is a very popular spring training destination for Japanese major league teams (baseball, soccer, volleyball) .
The hotel literally stands out as it is the tallest building (40+ floors) around (maybe even of all of Miyazaki) and quite a distance from town. There is nothing between it and the beach save for 2 golf courses, a small pine forest and a seawall (remember the ever present danger of tsunamis in Japan) doubling as a toll road. Our ocean facing room (1414) was very spacious with a big bathroom where toilet, bath tub and shower stall are nicely separated.
What was weird is that there is no WiFi in the room, only cable (fee) which is fine if you carry a laptop but does not plug into an ipad. Strange thing in 2014 AD. (note to Management: please watch your guests and secretly count how many of them are traveling with an ipad, will you?).
However, there is free WiFi in the reception area and the levels immediately above and below.
The hotel has its own spa (free) in a fake Japanese village a short distance away (covered walk way). A health club is located on the 4th floor. It is free for top level SPG members; all others pay approx. $ 20 per day.
You can also rent a bike for $5 an hour ($ 8 for electric bikes) which is certainly worthwhile to go to the Marina or visit one of several local shrines, one of which is especially popular with fishermen.. Although there are no hills or even slopes I recommend the electric bike in case your legs happen to be long by Japanese standards. It would also be appreciated if the hotel management could more clearly mark the bike routes, especially in English.
The Breakfast buffet was great and caters to Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Western tastes. Despite its rather isolated location (taxi to downtown area is approx. $22) the hotel;s restaurants are very reasonable priced and there is also a convenience store on the premises.
Checkout is quite early at 11:00 AM.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms face the ocean however, the hotel's foot rint is shaped like an arrow so you mi...

The hotel is not so close to the rail station, so you will certainly have to take a taxi. The luggage service is very good, you don't have to carry your suitcases by your own at all. Check-in and check-out was really easy and fast.

The rooms were very spacious and clean, but you would expect complimentary wi-fi in every room in a hotel of such prestige and ranking. One additional minus is that there was no complimentary water in the rooms (or we did not find and note saying it is complimentary). The stuff in the hotel is extremely friendly and service oriented. There is a nice golf course near by. You can also use the hot springs - unfortunately you have to walk outside to reach them and some of them were in maintenance at the time of visiting. The food in the restaurants is good but high priced. The hotel also offers shopping opportunities and a spa area (we did not visit it).

All in one: not so much as you would expect for the ranking of the hotel and the price of rooms. Very disappointing that no complimentary wi-fi or even water is offered. The beach is also not so close and the transportation from and to the hotel is expensive (no shuttle bus to the airport or Miyazaki).

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for having stayed at Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort.

We are deeply sorry about the inconvenient wi-fi environment that caused you.
Under present circumstances, only at public spaces from 1st to 3rd floor are available to obtain wi-fi access,
in the meantime we are now planning to extend our wi-fi area available to all guest rooms in near future.

Regarding complimentary bottle of water, there is a special privilege Starwood Preferred Guest can gain, which are
two complimentary bottles of water with your stay.
We apologize we missed guidance about Starwood Preferred Guest membership to introduce you to upon your check-in.
For your future reference, Starwood Preferred Guest membership is not necessary to pay any entrance and annual fees to hold.
In addition, the membership card is able to be used at any Starwood alliance hotels all over the world.

As you mentioned, the beach is not so close to the hotel.
However in summer time, a complimentary shuttle bus will take you to the beach.
Required time to and from the beach is about 10 minutes one way.
We also open the garden pool during summer, then we expect you to experience different atmosphere in summer.

We hope you stay at Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort some day in future again.
We all staff hope to be of service to you in your future stay.

Lastly we deeply appreciate about your valued feedback and comments to us.
We consider them for better services for our guests.

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel from 8/Sept/13 to 9/Sept/13.

After checked-in, we found that the air-con in our room was faulty and I informed the staff, prompt action was taken by him and we were offered to upgrade to a bigger room. The new room was very spacious and with good view. We had very good sleep for both nights.

Both the breakfast and dinner provided by the hotel were good, we really enjoyed the foods. This is a beautiful hotel with comfortable onsen. We will sure come back to stay here again if we ever visit Miyazaki.

Here for work for 2 weeks... Room was huge and has beautiful view of the ocean. Also has a nice quiet onsen to experience Japanese spa in our "birthday suit". Only letdown is the poor setup of No Internet or wifi in the rooms. Had to pay ¥1200/day to access. Free wifi only between level 1-3 common areas. Weird for me allowing smoking indoors but guess its just a local culture.

We really looked forward to visiting the Sheraton to get some rays and beach. This hotel stay was for 5 days and if it wasn't for Mai and the rest of the staff trying to make our stay bearable, we would have canceled after the first night. Mai and the staff have a lot of spirit and the ability to make the situation workable, but the Sheraton needs to step up and invest money and resources into this hotel. We arrived on a Sunday, no internet in the room to accommodate iphones, ipads, laptops, etc. and we work always while on holiday. We had to rush to Yamada? electronic stores and the staff there did not give up and helped us purchase what we needed to make our connection, but unfortunately we could only get one laptop working at a time. Big problem. Mai showed up Monday with a couple of IT staff and a router for the room, but still only one laptop to work. Mai and the staff are diligent in their desire to help but again Sheraton needs to update and think about taking away any worries or frustrations for their guests and future income. Sheraton, the only reason I gave you an average instead of terrible is because of the earnest fortitude of your staff. The hallways leading to all rooms were scorching hot and we could not wait to get into our room with the air conditioning. Twin beds in all the rooms... update please. I will recommend a special pillow they offered in the closet and i loved it so much I bought one in Tokyo, it is filled with plastic beads and it is similar to acupressure for the head and neck. Nice! Our view was spectacle of the ocean. No pool was functioning, all the water gone and they were in repairs. A bike trek to the beach and it is not an inviting beach with all the barriers. The public beach we went to by taxi and it was deserted, too hot. No beach time for the summer holiday. Ok, lemons make lemonade. Went shopping, mall nearby by taxi, prices less than Tokyo. The food is ok and the buffet is plentiful, you can even try Japanese breakfast and some things are ok. They have a large activities area where you can schedule horseback riding, excursions, rental cars, etc. We should have rented a car from day 2 onwards. You must have an international license which in the US you can get from AAA. In Europe, consult your TCS or Falk, road service company. The GPS comes in English and other languages. It is something of a challenge but if you have driven internationally especially on the left in the UK, you will be fine. We went to the south with our car and saw Miyazaki and the Udo Shrine. Both very cool and memorable. The Miyazaki is an island connected to a walking bridge. There are plenty of places to look for shells and sea life on the special environmental rock steppes. The Udo Shrine is into a cave and there is a game to play where you toss pebbles off the cliff into a shallow puddle surrounded by a rope. Each pebble has an inscription with prosperity, etc. You donate 100 yen or one dollar to the shrine to play with 5 pebbles. Drive further south and hopefully the Monkey Island will be open for you but it was not for us that day. Drive further south and see the wild horses. The trek there is narrow and mountainous. Sheraton we would love to visit your area again, it has so much to offer with your staff, sights to see, and even the taxi drivers were amusing! You require a new group in upper management and investment in your employees and circumstances. You have a great potential in the Sheraton and the convention center. As a guest, we do not want to pay for potential, investors do that and expect results.

Room Tip: oceanview, upper floor.
