“Quiant little hostel in a hot spring town”
Reviewed 25 December 2013 via mobile

Me and my travel buddy spent a day in Beppu and, being a big fan of the Khaosan Tokyo hostel chain, I decided to book a twin room for that night.

The hostel is walking distance from JR Beppu station but snugly tucked within an array of maze-like alleyways so I recommend obtaining an access map when seeking it out. The two of us managed fine using Google maps, and you know you're at the right place when you see a large red vertical sign protruding out from the row of buildings proudly proclaiming 'Khaosan Beppu'. There is a footbath outside the entrance, a very lovely touch.

Checking in was a smooth process: the lovely lady at the reception counter spoke impeccable English as she processed the administration and briefed us about the place. We also obtained a simple map of the town that highlighted recommended eateries and bathhouses.

Our twin room was the smallest on the 2nd floor, a simple affair with a bunk bed and a small desk. There was sufficient room to dump our luggage and move around. WiFi throughout the building was reliable and internet connection was fast. The beds and sheets were clean and comfy.

The common room on the first floor had a welcome atmosphere but smelled faintly of cigarette smoke, which was to be expected since it was the only place you could smoke in the building. It did not bother us too much since we did not really use that room. There was a humble collection of manga and books in there as well. In the reception hall computer terminals with Internet access and a public phone were available, and plenty of maps and guides on how to get around in Beppu. You could brew tea and coffee in the kitchen for free, and there are plenty of amenities and cutlery for cooking, everything you'd expect to find in a kitchen.

Also, what set this hostel apart from all its Khaosan Tokyo counterparts is the fact that it has an onsen bath. The bathtub was a tiled pool of clear hot water, no-frills but no less a luxury. You don't have to worry about sporting tattoos if you wish to bathe here since they have no such restriction.

Without a doubt, I would stay here again if I ever found myself in Beppu. It was a warm, pleasant experience from start to finish, and its quiet location and many comforts gave me a very restful sleep that night.

(The receptionist girl was very pretty, I wish I had at least gotten her name.)

It was cheap and we liked the tips of Beppu onsen and cozy manga room. Free internet was useful. Though there are a lot of cheap places in Beppu and I guess this was not the most reasonable place for the quality. The room was stinky , so does the changing room of the bath room(It's not the smell of Hot spring). Place wasn't so clean. People in the reception are fine but the person in the evening and morning both gave me a wrong information, wrong direction and completely wrong time table. So I had to ask people on the street and had hard time.

Close to some cool spas and they even have one in the hotel. The kitchen is just amazing everything u might need, and they even have a little free food. There is a store where you Can get food and supplies. For a backpacker this is worth stopping by for a few days:)

We stayed in a private twin room with a private bathroom for 3 nights at the start of April. When we booked, we received a helpful email from the hotel in English, confirming our stay and giving us extra information about the accommodation. Our flight arriving at Oita Airport was late, and the staff were helpful and explained how to access the property if the front desk was closed. Online, it says that parking costs 700yen per day, but actually the staff let us park in their place, so it was free, which was very kind of them! The various staff members were very helpful in giving us maps and information/advice about local restaurants etc. They have lots of maps and timetables for local attractions in the main area, and in our room we also found a binder (one in English, one in Japanese) full of information about what to do in Oita prefecture. We had a car, but they also provided useful bus information for travelers using public transport. Our room was nice - tatami room with bunk beds, we actually separated them out, the room was nice and big. We had storage space for our clothes, a table and a balcony with 2 chairs. The bathroom was fine, basic but there was an onsen on the 1st floor, which was good to use instead of showering. The kitchen was well-stocked, and there was also a manga/relaxing room. A good place to stay!

Most Japanese accommodation is very expensive, especially family like us(we have 3 kids). And in my case, traveling Kyushu with rental car, I need only a room for our family, don't want to spend much money for that room, this is perfect place.

Japanese tatami style room is wide enough for our 3 young kids(5,3,1yrs old), cleanly managed.
The hosts are very friendly.

The common bathroom has onsen, too. Even though it is very small place.

My single room was clean. Host was nice and answered all questions good with English. Bit tricky to find by car in a one way alley and no shower as Onsen was broken today. It's not as bad as people say just a normal hostel and I found it clean.
