“Large and cozy”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

It is one of many good places in Beppu to enjoy the hot spring. It is large with different kind of pools. Sand bath is also available.. Entrance fee is even a bit cheaper if you enter after 7 p.m.

“Great variety”
Reviewed 22 December 2011

PROS: Lots of different baths to choose from both indoor and outdoor of varying termperatures. Also a great 'waterfall' shower/bath that can be used for a massage. Has a separate area for sand bathing too and private baths available for charter. Lovely courtyard in the middle of the complex for relaxing after the bath, with drinks and onsen-boiled eggs available for purchase.

CONS: A tad expensive, at 700yen, although this drops to 550yen after 6pm. Can get quite crowded, especially after 6pm when the price drops, and on weekends. At these times, the showering area gets very full and you may need to wait to wash before entering the baths.

“Our private little Onsen!!”
Reviewed 21 December 2011

I go this place with my British husband and 4 & 7 yo sons often. We love this place!

**Family Bath**
Since my hubby doesn't like being 'naked' in front of a bunch of Japanese people, he doesn't like going to the public bath - which is the most common Onsen (hot spa) in Japan. But many Onsen around Beppu has so-called "Family Bath" - which is a little private Hot Spa. Hyoutan Onsen has the total of 9 Family Bath. Five of them are 'Uchi-yu (inside Bath)" with a roof, and Four of them are "Roten-buro (Outside-Bath)". Both types are completely closed-in and private.

You pay 2000 yen at the reception, and they will give you a key and a Coin (token). You will find the bath tub empty if you go to your Family Bath. The hot water started gushing in, when you put the token. It takes about 5 mins to fill up the bath tub. You can put some cold water to adjust the temperature. The Onsen (spa) water would keep running till 45 mins time, so that will give you an indication when you should get out.

Every room has the 'sauna', and some of them has 'Cold Bath" tub as well.

*Other Bath"
Their other bath includes:
- Suna Yu (Sand Bath)
Sand Bath is unique way of enjoying the Spa steam. You wear the special disposal underwear and Yukata, and bury yourself into the sand.

- Roten Buro (Outside Bath)
Onna Yu (Female Bath) and Otoko Yu (Male Bath)
- Hokou Yu (Walking Bath)
You walk on the Spa warmed 'stones' which will massage stimulate the sole of your feet. Feet are said to have the energy spots for all over the body.

- Taki Yu (Falling Bath)
A bit Zen style, but you go under the fallen luke warm water. Massage your body by the natural bath.

- Mushi Yu (Steam Bath/ Sauna)

- Other typical Onsen bath are available as well. It's an Onsen amusement park. :)

*Rest area/ Food*
They have a full serve restaurant as well as the resting area. At the resting area, you can buy all types of Manju (buns), Boiled eggs, Ice cream, Softdrinks, Beers and other takeaway types of food. We normally sit down to cool down after the bath.
