Owner description: These eight boiling pools resulting from volcanic activity have varying characteristics: one is blood-red in color due to its red clay deposits, another has the largest geyser in Japan, and still another is used for breeding crocodiles.

“Some good and some bad”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

We got some information at Beppu station on which buses to take as well as a bus schedule at the foreign tourist information Center. We bought 4 day bus passes which cost 900 yen each and it came with a coupon to save about 200 yen if you want to see all the hells, from about 2100 yen to 1900 yen.

I found 4 of the hells, the sea hell, the mud hell and the two hells that were away from the rest the best ones by far. Some of the hells were pretty lame, but at least they were close by. It was easy to take the bus, but they also offer a tour that runs twice a day in Japanese. I would recommend taking transit as it was easy with the information given, and you can go at your own pace.

It was an interesting experience for at least some of the Hells, and worth the visit if you are in Beppu or nearby Oita.

“Mother's Nature Awesome Creations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2014

The Hell was the hightlight of my visit to Beppu apart from the wondeerful onsen. It is worth a lifetime visit. You get to see so many cololurful volcanic geysers - white, silver, red, blue, brown....It is amazing. It is worth the 45 min. wait at the last geyser (forgot the name) for the ultimate geyser rushing out from the ground. Never leave Beppu without visiting this Hell of a sight.
After the Hell, make sure you go to an onsen in the mountains. It is the best way to relax.

“Very interesting despite the rain”

Lovely place to go, even when it was pouring down. Kids (6 and 8) were very impressed. Animals could have had better conditions though

“Very special!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014

We took the tour. It costs 3700 yen and you can get it at the trainstation. The bus leaves right there also. Takes about 3 hours.

The tourguide showed us all 9 "Hellpools". Amazing to see... the colours of each pool was very different. Blue, red, white. One of them was a fountain type of hotspring.

Definately worth visiting!

“I almost gave it a miss. What a mistake that would have been!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2014

To think I l almost gave this a miss gives me the chills. The reviews I have read on this somewhat put me off classing it as a 2nd class touristy thing but really if you are in Beppu you have to visit ‘The Hells’. It is a bit commercialized but look past this and see something truly special.

You do have to pay and they are located at two different sites (within walking distance) but I doubt you will ever have seen anything as naturally impressive in your life. The hells are set in lovely gardens and just walking around these on a nice day is perfect.

I hope my photos do enough to show you this is not to be missed.
