“Good budget option”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

Only stayed here for a night, used it as a base to visit Beppu and Yufuin, and the plan worked well (there weren’t any Toyoko Inns in Beppu nor Yufuin). Arrived in Oita from Kumamoto at 11.30am, left our luggage with the hotel then walked back to JR Oita Station (which is why it was so very important to be just 5 mins walk from the station) and hopped onto a Sonic train for Beppu. Kyushu was the last place we expected to encounter snow, but snow it did that afternoon in Beppu. Returned to the hotel that evening after some sightseeing in Beppu.

Next day, we checked out in the morning but left our luggage with the hotel at the lobby. They usually give you a luggage tag and place a green (at times red) net (with bells attached) over the whole lot of bags. Sometimes, they even tied the bags together with string before they throw the net over.

Luggage secured, we left for Yufuin with our onsen towels to enjoy our first onsen experience. We were in the onsen by 10am (just ask at Yufuin Station - recommended one not far from Yufuin Station that opened at 10am). Returned to Oita after lunch, picked up our luggage, and headed back to Oita Station to take a train to Hakata where we were to spend the night.

Like the other 11 Toyoko Inns we stayed in during our trip, this Toyoko Inn was also very clean, safe, and offered good value.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights end of October to beginning of November. It has a very inviting lobby. The entire front is glass, to the left of the reception counter is the sitting/dining area where the free breakfast is served and there are also 2 computer terminals, with a printer and a fax machine. Reception is perhaps 24/7, fast, efficient, friendly, but English is rudimentary. I came back well past midnight twice and the minute I stepped in, someone pops up behind the counter! The wireless is free, and the connection is via cable in the room. There is a current campaign with membership fee of 1,500 Yen and that gives you discounts for certain days. Well worth the money if you plan to stay with them often. But you have to be a member first (apply first at reception) and book online at their website. The single room I got was small with a double bed. But it came with the usual amenities including a trouser press. However, there was no closet, but there are hangers and they encourage you to use the space under the comfortable bed to store your luggage, etc. There was also a small kettle/humidifier unit, plus the bar fridge, hair dryer, slippers, shoe mitts/horn and a dressing gown/pj. The bathroom is a prefab unit, I am beginning to believe this is standard for all hotels in Japan! And I really hate that. However, the amenities supplied are adequate. I would stay here again if I am in the area, and also the other locations of this chain if they are as good as this one! Oh did I mention it is also very close to the main bus/train station in Oita.
