“Cool location, wonderful staff and great value!”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

I stayed here for two nights after visiting Iriomote Island. Gon-san and his family/staff were wonderful! His English was excellent and they even have a map of the local area in English. I rented a private room (even though just me) and it was HUGE, especially by Japanese standards. I also used his rental car (3,000 yen I think). It's old and a bit rusty, but worked well and has Navi (if you can read Japanese). His wife even programmed a restaurant in for me and I just followed the arrows and directions (easy even if you don't know Japanese). Location was great for local town, beach, hanging out. Recommend getting a rental car though if you want to see other parts of Ishigaki. Beautiful, beautiful island. Unfortunately a typhoon came and I couldn't SCUBA dive, but highly recommend that (Manta Scramble) if you are certified. Domo Arigato Gon-san and family!

Gon and Mayu are wonderful hosts. We spent 5 great days @ their guesthouse. Use the pickup service and don't hesitate to ask whatever you have to know. Gon knows all and helps with everything. THE place to be on Ishigaki.

We just spend one night in Iriwa but would prefer to stay longer.
The owners invited us to eat a delicious dinner (korean kimchi) with the family and other customers. Later they play original okinawa music in the garden so we have a great night there! There is also a privat shuttle service to the new airport or to Ishigaki-city.

Gon and his wife are super friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the cottage, which was lovely and had so much more character than a boring hotel room. There is a fully equipped kitchen available for use along with other guests and a nice lounge area as well. Kabira, the village, has several good, well priced restaurants, a shop and a couple of bars. Overall, a great stay.

Gon and his wife (and some of his friends) run the friendliest guesthouse I have ever stayed in. This is not your average backpackers lodgings, the room we had in the main house was huge with great windows and direct access to the roof - perfect for stargazing on those balmy Ishigaki evenings. Kabira is the place to be on the island and Gon is full of tips on how best to enjoy it. Sunset barbecues on the beach, the best snorkelling spots, restaurant tips, shortcuts - he can fill you in...and probably lend your some of the equipment you need as well! Great people, great guesthouse, great fun and a great end to our holiday. 5 stars!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the suite in the main building - balcony, private bathroom, a/c, huge beds, direct roof acce...

We stayed in Iriwa for part of our honeymoon in Ishigaki. The location was excellent, about 10 mins walk to Kabira Bay and 7 mins to the nearest snorkelling point.

The guesthouse is comfy, the people who work there, Gon San, his wife and his friends are really funny and lovely! As it was our honeymoon, on the last day, they threw a small party for us with champagne and a surprise honeymoon cake! So sweet!

As mentioned in the review below, the double private room we stayed on the 2nd floor is lovely, really spacious and comfortable. The only place in Japan we stayed where we were able to spread out our suitcase! The whole place had a very relaxed and friendly feel to it.

Gon san was also very helpful in helping us plan our stay and helped to drop us off at the bus stop a few times. His English is also excellent which helps!

Really recommend on staying here!

Stayed here as part of a month long tour of the Yaeyama islands with my partner. Don`t let the word "Backpackers" throw you off if that`s not your thing, it`s an incredible guesthouse!

We stayed in the cottage room which was so cute. The bed was comfy, the room spotless and with plenty of space. There is a lovely decking out the front with a hammock and a small bathroom next to the cottage. My parents stayed in one of the double rooms upstairs and it was HUGE!! By far the largest room we found on our whole trip. They also had a balcony with comfy seats which was great. The common room downstairs is fully kitted out with a large seating area, well equiped kitchen, big tv, air con and fan, free p.c. to use (oh and there is wi fi throughout as well). There is a great BBQ area outside - again free to use. As travellers who usually stay in dorm rooms, the cottage was a treat but even the dorm here looked fab. Curtains provide privicy and the room was large enough not to feel like you were ontop of your neighbours. Definitely one of the nicest dorm rooms we have seen.

Despite all this by far the highlight of our stay at Iriwa was the fabulous service provided by Gon and Mayu. They were so friendly and helpful we really couldn`t have asked for more. They picked us up from the bus station and showed us where everything in Kabira was. They helped us plan our time in Ishigaki even when we had left Iriwa as well as providing us with bike, moped and car hire which is all on site so it was easy peasy. They also booked our Manta diving trip for us even when we had left the guesthouse. They really are doing a fantastic job.

All this within a few minutes from Kabira Bay... unbeatable.

Thank you so much for such a good stay at Iriwa!!
