“Wonderful, relaxing place to stay with excellent hospitality!”
Reviewed 24 April 2013

Highly recommend taking the opportunity to experience the amazing hospitality at Le Lotus Bleu. This is absolutely a perfect place for families with or without children. The owners, Maiko and Patrick, were so helpful in making recommendations of what to see and do on the island. They were always interested in hearing about our experiences after coming home for the day out on the island. I wish we had taken the advantage of staying for more meals at the guesthouse as the few that we had were out of this world. Transportation was easily accessible whether it be by bus or bikes that they provided for rental right at the house. Wonderful family to meet and beautiful place to stay in Ishigaki! Definitely hope to stay there when we go back to the island. Wouldn't look any further.

My Fiancé and I recently spent 8 days on Ishigaki at Le Lotus Bleu in Shiraho. I previously lived in Ishigaki for 2 years, and was looking for a off the beaten track place to stay away from the relatively nondescript city center of Ishigaki City. Shiraho is, despite the new airport, an authentic Ishigaki town with its own unique culture, (including a unique town language), coral stone fences and many traditional homes--making it the perfect place for a relaxed and authentic Ishigaki stay. The town is well connected by buses (or as we did by bicycle) to the amenities of the city, but far enough away that you can enjoy the nature and quiet that makes Ishigaki special. Le Lotus Bleau was recommended to us by some friends who are long-term Shiraho residents.

The inn is housed in a very interesting building, worth taking a peak at even if you decide not to stay. The building is a 100+ year old farmhouse that was transplanted to Shiraho 20 or so years ago during Japan's bubble days from mainland Japan by an eccentric kimono maker. It remained empty for several years until Patrick Vernioulle and his wife Maiko Okutani bought the property two years ago. At the time of its purchase it did not have indoor plumbing, and still essentially maintained the integrity of life in rural Japan 100 years ago. Over the last two years the couple have fully and thoughtfully updated the property to include all the amenities needed for modern comfort, while still preserving the character and feeling of the old house.

The hotel rents rooms by the week. Each room is characterized by a comfortable bathroom, tatami mats, exposed rafters and expansive windows. Unlike most Japanese accommodations prices are not determined by the number of occupants which makes this quite a bargain if you travel with more than one person. The hotel is surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens, and Patrick and Maiko are firm believers in the importance of a good meal. The hotel is equipped with an expansive and professional grade kitchen and the food, made of fresh island fruits, vegetables, in adventurous dishes influenced by the couple's diverse franco-japanese heritage is excellent. We had breakfast twice during our stay and dinner once, and if we come back we will definitely choose to dine more frequently (the food was that good and that fresh!).

The house is large, eclectic and very much lived in. Patrick and Maiko are generous to a fault, and truly make you feel like you are a part of the family. They dispense helpful island information, are free to allow you use of laundry, bicycles, and snorkeling gear. They have two young daughters and the hotel is definitely child-friendly--though this in no way obtrudes on the pleasantness of the accommodations. The hotel is nestled in a neighborhood and is a 3 min walk from the beach. We enjoyed many mornings walking to the beach, or simply walking around town and saying hi to friendly neighbors who always greeted us with a smile (a very different experience then if you stay in Ishigaki City).

I lived in Ishigaki for 2 years, and have visited once since then. I definitely recommend Le Lotus Bleu as a perfect way to experience these islands.
