The price is right, which draws many backpackers to this hostel. Me included. I stayed in the men's dorm room, which is made up of capsule-like bed spaces separated by thin, wooden walls. Sheets hang at the front for "privacy", however, you can hear every sound in the room. It's lights out at midnight, which is the earliest you can hope to get to bed. People are in and out making a lot of noise at all hours.

While I saw an a/c unit, it was rarely on. And even when it was, it was still hot. Fans are scattered about, but mainly pointed at the staff bunks. The hostel is cleanish. They wash and dry the bedding, but I watched (on multiple occasions) as they dumped the clean bedding onto the dirty floor to be folded. In general, I felt the staff was more interested in playing video games, drinking, and watching shows on their laptops than interesting with or helping guests.

Pros: I met a lot of cool travelers there and we did stuff together. They have free wifi and outlets in each bed pod. No bed bugs. Cameras helped maintain a certain level of security. There is a nice kitchen available to use. It's cheap. Location isn't bad.

Kerama has a few great staff members that are very easygoing and open to conversation in the common room. They are also very helpful in giving you directions and recommendations for places to eat and visit, and can speak English pretty well. Kerama is also in a great location for Naha. The aquarium and prettier beaches are 1-2 hours away though, and can be expensive to get to by bus and cab.

The rooms are NOT air conditioned 24/7 as advertised on their website, and are very uncomfortable. If you're lucky, you'll get a bunk bed, but most sleeping areas are handmade "capsules" with half walls and a fabric curtain for privacy. You sleep on a very thin futon.

The girl's floor (upstairs) only has one shower room that's open 9am-midnight, and a toilet. The shower itself had hot water, but isn't the cleanest around. Absolutely no drinks or food are allowed in the sleeping areas-- even water -- out of fear that the cockroaches will return. The staff will sometimes rudely check your sleeping space for any drinks or food without warning. Hair dryers and soap are provided, laundry is 100 yen, towels aren't provided, and lockers are 1,000 yen to use. Security is nonexistent, but I felt safe and never had any problems with my belongings.

You get what you pay for at 1,200 yen a night, and it's tolerable for short stays. If you're looking to stay in Okinawa for 4+ nights though, I'd strongly recommend booking a hotel or a different hostel.

Stayed here as part of a month long trip of Okinawa in June 2012.

Great location for anyone wanting to visit the kerama Island asTomari ferry port is maybe 5mins walk, & the nearest monorail station is also a 5 min walk.

Very comfortable guesthouse, free wifi, nice bunk's, good cooking area, helpful staff. nice little rooftop terrace. For JPY1000 a night, it was a great guesthouse. Recommended to anyone on a budget

I was on vacation with some friends in Okinawa, and we were recommended here. The location is nice, only about 10 minutes walk from Miebashi station, and about 20 minutes by rail from the airport. Also, it's only about 15 minutes walk to Kokusai Dori, a main street with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. The hostel itself is situated in a...well..."less pretty" part of the city; but don't worry, you're in Japan, you won't get mugged.

The facilities are definitely the downside to this place. The beds and linens are clean, so no worries there. On the other hand, the common areas could use a serious makeover in my opinion. There's nothing terrible like mold or pests, but the space just feels really cluttered and disorganized. It's not a huge detriment, but you will feel a bit like you're staying in a dump when you walk in. I will reiterate, though, that the bedding is clean.

Lastly, the staff here are all super cool; in fact, they're probably the best thing about this place. All friendly, all full of suggestions, and all open to a little conversation (in Japanese, of course).

Bottom line: stay here if you're traveling with friends. Not much privacy. Not the prettiest place you'll stay. Awesome staff. Good location.

Room Tip: Private rooms aren't much better than bunks. Go with a dormitory.

Guesthouse Kerama was very close to Miebashi monorail station in Naha city, Okinawa. It took for about 10min from the station by walk. and Tomarin port was pretty near to the guesthouse. (Many kind of passenger boats sails regularly from Tomarin port to the other small islands near Okinawa main island). The main street(Kokusai douri) also very close to guesthouse. And If you hope to stay the money for travel, you can cook by yourself at the guest house and you can share the food with new friends. The price of KERAMA is amazing! very cheap!!!!! The rooms were very clean. And In the living room, you can make many good international friends also with some party(Japanese food party, birthday party etc). I like the living room of Kerama. I felt comportable at there. Lastly, the staff of Guesthouse Kerama were so cool and very friendly. so I could feel comportable during stay there in my travel by myself. Have a nice trip in Okinawa!

Due to the typhoon, I ended up staying at Kerama guesthouse for 5 nights instead of 1, but the very friendly and helpful staff and the nice guests made the stay my best living experience on my Japan trip. New in Japan and at loss with the diversity of Japanese food, watching the residents (some seemed to live there) prepare Japanese food was like getting a crash course in Japanese cooking for free. Thanks for all!
