“Just as well we had been to the prefecture museum first”

Because we had been to the Prefectual Museum and Shuri-Jo Castle this small Collection made sense. The photos of Naha and Okinawa before WW2 were very interesting especially as Naha was devastated by the Battle of Okinawa and most of the sites were destroyed. Not much in English, nor is there an audio guide. I am still glad I went. Beautiful Shuri royal Ryukyu kimonos.

It is with great disappointment that I am writing this review. The only positive thing about this "museum" was the friendliness of the staff. Unfortunately, many artefacts were destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa; therefore there really is very little to see here. The majority of items are old photographs, old maps, some calligraphy, and pictures of artefacts. Barely enough contained in the two small rooms to hold your attention for more than half an hour. As a previous poster remarked, there are few descriptions in English, so for the most part you don't know what you're even viewing. A real shame that such a long history has been lost. Terribly disappointing, and really not worth the 300 Yen entry fee, I'm afraid.

The Naha City Museum is located inside a large shopping mall, and contains artefacts donated by the descendants of the Ryukuyuan royal family. It is a surprisingly tiny museum considering the history of the subject matter. While there are some interesting items on display, it's not a must-see, and sadly, lacking in any meaningful English guide for non-Japanese people, meaning that most of the exhibits are largely inaccessible.
