“Book early to get promotional rate”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We stayed in the Hotel JAL Coty Matsuyama for two nights. We reserved our room using the hotel’s toll free worldwide reservation phone number. When making the reservation, we were asked if we had any special requests and ours (extra towels, away from elevator, upper floor) were met without our having to mention them again at check-in. We got a JAL Hotels Promotional Rate For Early Booking (a minimum of 14 days before the arrival date) which was a very good deal. We requested and received an email confirmation immediately after the telephone reservation was made.

We reserved a standard castle view double room with queen bed. We probably would have been more comfortable in a twin room since our double room at 20 square metres was a bit cramped. The room was nothing special, nothing memorable. The best part was the excellent view of the castle and the surrounding garden and moat, with its lone swan.

The room was equipped with wired internet service which was quite good and speedy. There were all the usual suspects as far as toiletries and amenities.

The staff spoke excellent English and always was very pleasant, helpful, and professional. They deal with quite an international clientele.

At check-in we were given coupons for a discount on the buffet breakfast. We ate at the buffet for our second breakfast before departure. It was very large with numerous options, both Japanese and Western (We prefer Japanese breakfast when in Japan). It definitely was worth the price.

The hotel is a short distance from the JR station - 10 to 15 minutes walk with rolling suitcases. There is a tram stop around the corner from the front of the hotel which proved very useful for sightseeing adventures and evening outings to restaurants. (Not many restaurants, besides the hotel’s own, nearby) There also is a Family Mart diagonally across the street for snacks. Be sure to ask at the Tourist Information Center about combination tickets for tram and site seeing options: the castle, Dōgo Onsen, and Botchan steam tram ticket combo offers a savings and there were other combination tickets as well, I recall.

Room Tip: Upper level, facing castle, a twin room would be a better choice than a double for more floor space.

Had a one night stopover stay. The hotel is a typical Japanese style business hotel. As such rooms are on the smaller side however each room is equipped with the basic essentials. Staff were very friendly and courteous. Arrived at 1.30 pm and were told very politely that room was not available until 2.00 pm. Understand these are the rules but some flexibility in such things would help make for a more pleasant experience overall. There is a decent buffet breakfast in the morning serving both Western and Japanese food. Although convenient to a tram stop just outside the location is a bit out of the way from the main JR stations and main shopping and tourist area.

Better than business hotels: rooms are quite large. Ours was looking at the park and castle: wonderful but could be noisy (police/ambulances at night).
Clean, confortable, good beds.
Efficient service. Good buffet breakfeast at reasonable price (1200Y).
Tram stop in front: direct to JR station, city center/castle lift or Dogo Onsen.

It’s hard to get any hotel in Matsuyama that is close to everything but the JAL cuts a good compromise by being mid-way to most everything.
The #5 tram stops right out front and that connects most of the ‘must-sees’ although if the Dogo Onsen is of particular interest then it’s ca. 30 minutes away at the end of the line.
It’s about a 15 minute walk from either the JR or local railway stations (opposite directions) or ¥550 and a few minutes by taxi.
Front rooms have an uninterrupted view of the castle and the upper level back rooms look out to the Inland Sea. We had a twin room at the front which was comfortable, reasonably sized and well insulated from the traffic noise.
English language knowledge at the front desk was satisfactory and the service was gracious and efficient. The breakfast (part of our tariff) buffet was very good with a wide range of choices however, don’t turn up late as things start to run down and they are not replenished much after 9:30AM. The same restaurant also has a very decent dinner buffet at a reasonable price.
The WiFi was a bit fiddly but was fast and reliable once set up and was evidently more secure than an open hotel-wide system.
For a ‘see-the-sights’ visit to Matsuyama the JAL would be hard to beat. We would come back.

Stayed here for 3 nights in October, and chose this hotel based mainly on city-centre availability for my price-bracket and the room size.

The room (double) was an OK size (for Japan) which we needed for our 2 suitcases we brought on our travels. Other than that, the room was your standard business-hotel affair. The shower was better than average though, and our room had a nice view looking onto the moated park/castle-grounds. The room is supposed to have free WiFi, but to use it you have to get a device/modem from the reception (leaving a deposit) and set it up. I couldn't get it working and gave up after a while. This was disappointing, as nowadays rooms should have good, free, easy-to-access WiFi. I just wanted it to check a few things, so used the free WiFi in the lobby.

There seemed to be an Italian restaurant within the hotel, but we didn’t use it or have breakfast, so can’t comment on those.

Normally I go for hotels which are as close to the city centre as possible, but this was a bit further away than I would have liked, - though you can catch the #5 tram to the centre (Okaido) from a stop just around the corner.

Overall, this is a standard hotel and our stay was fine, but I would have preferred something closer to town, but for my price bracket (15,000 yen), there didn’t seem to be much to choose from in Matsuyama.

I stayed there for 3 nights. Nothing special or traditional but good hotel corresponding to foreigners expectations. No WiFi which is a bit annoying for such an hotel when you want to search the web for things to do in Shikoku.

Nicely located close to the Matsuyama Castle and the Dogo Onsen (via tram). We got a room that has the view of the castle which is nice both day and night. The room is decently sized in Japanese standard. There is a Family Mart from across which is good for a late night bite. Despite facing the tram rails, the rooms are pretty quiet. Would like to stay again if visiting the area.
