Great site on the pilgrimage route, and really wonderful old buildings. The cave walk is really cool too

“There's so much to it I may have missed some!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2012

This place is incredible. We were expecting a temple but it's actually a temple complex! There are so many and varied buildings and statues you can fill your camera memory. Wear hiking boots and bring water because there are one or two small forested mountains that are part of this complex, with little stone buddha statues lining the trails to the top, of which there are many, and incredible views across the city. One of the mountains has an enormous stone buddha statue holding a shodo brush (Japanese calligraphy), looking out across the temple complex. You can photograph it from the bottom looking up, but it's so much better to make it up there yourself! If you're not old and infirm or a smoker or something, you can probably scramble up there in 10 to 15 minutes, but be warned, it can be a bit tricky at times so be prepared to push through bushes overgrowing the trail or clamber down a slippery rock on your bum! :-)

“worth a side trip from Dogo Onsen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2009

Convenient, and just a short taxi ride or 20 min walk from Dogo to see one of the 88 temples on the pilgrimage route. for tourists, you can "visit" all 88 temples by rubbing your hands over the symbols of all 88 temples marked at the shrine. watching true pilgrims as they proceed through the grounds is a treat. nice walk through the tunnels and caves filled with ancient items.
