there are a few ways to get to this temple - either 1) through the main entrance by the road, or via the back through 2) a cave with different statues through the hill or 3) ohenro sign-posted bamboo forest trail up and down the hill. if you start from the back and go through the cave that connects the temple to a giant mandela structure, it's exciting stuff as you don't really know what you're getting into, or how far / long the cave is - i totally loved it. (i also recommend bringing a torchlight if you're faint of heart) the temple itself if pretty cool as there are lots of artifacts and structures to see, and it is relatively accessible as temples go.

We were recommended to this temple in the late afternoon and were virtually the only visitors there. Very peaceful and serene (not always I guess!) and lovely setting amongst the trees. Cave unfortunately closed. Recommended

Don't miss this temple. The entrance and buildings are interesting to see with opportunities to burn incense. There is a big chart showing your birth year to predict how your year will go. But, don't miss the really cool tunnels at the back that are damp, low-roofed, and adorned with interesting things. You wind up exiting near the top of the mountain. Near the exit is the 360 degree Mandala - also intriguing.

Had problems at first finding Ishiteji temple (head to the park, and with it in front of you turn left up what looks like a main road for about 1km). Opposite direction to Dogo Onsen hot springs.
The temple itself covers a large area, find the tunnel and have a look through it (it does have lights but not many). On the other side you need go up the hill a few metres and cross the road to find the 'Gold' temple (which was closed when I went).

Normally temples in Japan are a model of restraint but all that is thrown out of the window at this temple! We visited the temple backwards (walking over the hill from Isaniwa Shrine) so we went through the tunnel before entering the temple complex - personally I thought this was a better way to visit the temple. The tunnels littered with statues and paintings but is dark so a torch would be advisable.
Suffice to say this temple is a little bonkers and I loved it!
