There are 2 Sheras located nearby – Shera Hotel and Shera Inn, both are located on the same street opposite each other. This review is for Shera Hotel.

The location is pretty close to the town centre – a 15min walk downhill will get you to a shopping mall with shops and food court. The anchor tenant is RamStore, a renowned local supermarket chain.

What stands out at the hotel is the staff, they are friendly and helpful – the concierge, Sam speaks excellent English and that is because ..... he hails from New Jersey. He has been in Almaty for a few years now and can converse in Russian. He is helpful.

The hotel itself is rather old and aged, although it is clean and comfortable. I was there for almost a week and the stay was good. I had a room facing the mountains, so it was a nice view waking up every morning to nice scenery, especially if it was a sunny and clear day.

The room is a bit small to my liking. Since I was staying alone, it was fine, but if you are with a companion, it may get a little cramped. The toilet was ok but the water pressure is not consistent – at times the pressure was strong, sometime it was very bad. The other thing was that the shower gel or shampoo was not replenished on a daily basis, even when it was almost empty. I had from the chamber maid when I bumped into her at the corridor.

The breakfast served had the same buffet spread almost every day. Limited choices of cereals, breads, pancakes, cold cuts, local dishes and fruits. The room rates that I had include breakfast for 1 person; for another person, you had to pay extra. I was told by a colleague that it was USD50 for the breakfast, which to me was rather expensive for the spread it was offering. But then again, Almaty is quite expensive.

All in all, there is nothing much to shout about the hotel, except for the staff. The rate is decent as compared to other hotels in the city, so that may be an incentive to stay here.

Room Tip: Request room facing the mountains

Quality hotels in Almaty are pretty expensive, so the best aspect about the Shera probably is that it offers value for money. Also, the cleanliness is pretty okay, I've seen much worse in Kazakhstan.

Other than that, the hotel is average in every aspect. What is true is that there are dogs barking around the hotel all night. While that may not be the hotel's fault, it can still affect your sleep. Also, if you prefer soft beds, the Shera may not be the right hotel for you. I don't like them too soft, so the Shera beds work for me.

All in all, an okay hotel. Not more, but also not less.

the hotel staff is great, but the hotel itself is rather expensive... like the whole almaty. do not expect to get for your money the travel you may be used in US or EU. the internet is horribly slow and you won't be able to send your emails using outlook or other email clients because of unproperly administered proxyserver they use. if you are lucky, you can do this using the old unconvenient web-interfaces.
last but not least, standard rooms are extremely small and to sit at the table and work with computer may be a probnleem for anyone who is over 170 cm (and i am far above it).
but so far, all hotels in almaty were like this - rather expensive with nice people and lousy services. i do not want to pay 300+ bucks for the "luxury" one hotels in the city and i will probably further look in this category in the future - but this hotel is outed for me now.

My wife and I had an awful experience at this hotel. Rooms were clean but showers were cold. Air conditioning did not work. Only received one towel a day. The neighborhood dogs were barking all night. And at check-out, they gave us a bill for over US $1000.00 for 3 day Internet access. The fine print of the contract at sign in says that they charge by the MB. I was working and transfering many files, and total came to this amount., Unbelievable and ridiculous. Please stay elsewhere.
