There are better hotels in Almaty. The Hyatt, The Intercontinental for instance. But this is a locals' place. A bit of a con job on "Sheraton", including the logo, in the true spirit of Asia :). Asia believes that the term "copyright" means the "right to copy". And the Shera is definitely in that camp.
The rooms are tiny, beds are uncomfortably hard (took 3 nights to get used to it), and dogs bark all night from the neighbor's house. But for those of us global road warriors who are used to battling 4:30 prayer calls in Muscat or Jakarta, this is no problem, because rubber earplugs do wonders for one's,sleep......
That said, the place is very clean albeit run down, the staff is nice and helpful, great bartenders, friendly bellman (Sam from Nigeria). The guests are mainly locals, which makes it interesting.
Despite the slightly rough conditions in the rooms, t think I would actually go back and stay here again... :)More
