I read some of the recent glowing reviews and I thought either I was at the wrong place or maybe the others had stayed in 2 star accomodation before this.
Look its not really bad, but for the money paid I'd expect better. It really looks a bit tired actually. Rooms are big and OK. However this power out for hours on end is just crazy. No hot water after 9 (I think) and not on again till 6, then off again!? A 5 star resort? Power out through the night? If you need to "go" at 2am, find a torch provided (ours very low on power), find your way in, balance said torch so you can actually see what your doing and hope it doesn't fall over.
How about we just spend a bit more on fuel for the generator?
Also, wifi, provided free (only when power on) but only in a tiny courtyard with 4 tables and chairs in the open. Each afternoon a gaggle of travellers were hunched down trying to "do their stuff" on ledges or the floor. Wouldn't the huge bar area (where they could sell you a drink) be a better idea? And even better when the power is on! Most people get back from the local game park around 4 then we all have to wait for 2 hours for lights and the wifi to be switched on.
It is nuts.

Room Tip: If I went back I'd insist on the Serena property

The hotel staff here were incredibly welcoming and helpful. They couldn't do enough for us and the food was delicious! Saw lots of animals on our game drives, but especially elephants, giraffe, zebra and hippos.

Amboseli hotel got very very cute room. in terms of design i think this hotel was my 2nd fav out of the 7 places we stayed.

the view of kirimanjaro mountain is def.the highlight!

service is not the best but its not as commercial as ashil group. so i still prefer sopa over ashnil.

It is situated in wilderness. An excellent place to stay. The mount Kilimanjaro view is amazing specially in clear day. We stayed for 2 nights as a part of our tour. We were 2 adults and 2 children. The room was excellent and very spacious. There were 2 queen size beds and an extra bed. The Bathroom is very spacious as well with 24 hour running water. The staff is very friendly. The good is nice as well with buffet setting. The power is provided by the generator so there is no power during the day time but most of the people were out on safari anyways. There are non threatening animals like monkeys, mongoose and mouse dear roam around. In the night at 9:15 pm animal feeding happens but unfortunately for the two nights we were there, no hyena came, only cats were there to eat. In all it is very good place to stay and relax in beautiful surroundings,

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of the a tour. We were triple occupancy and assigned to room 1, which was the last room on the path from the main reception building. Black-faced monkeys, dikdiks and mongoose roam the grounds as well as a number of birds.

Rooms 1 and 2 share a wall. One of the windows in our room 1 did not lock. The room contained 2 queen beds and a single (which we used as surface area to put stuff). This lodge was the only one we encountered during our safari that had carpet in the room.

Key chains to each room are different carved animals and are quite pretty. The room and bathroom are very spacious. Amenities include a safe, bath toiletries, 3 bottles of complimentary water nightly, hair dryer (request from reception, didn't work), candles, flashlight (needed newer batteries). There was limited counter top space in the bathroom and the shower drain didn't work so well. There is free WiFi in the courtyard right outside of the dining room building. Views of Kilimanjaro (early in the morning) is possible from the courtyard.

There are nightly animal feedings which attracted mainly cats. We didn't see any mongoose though we did encounter them during the dusk hours wandering around the lodge grounds.

Meals are all buffet style and we were seated with our tour mates.

Attached to reception area is a Masai village of crafts, opens late into the evening (10:30pm). Each stall sells pretty much the same things and haggling is expected.

Together with my friend we chose the road less traveled from Nairobi to Amboseli. Instead of taking the new road between Emali (on Nairobi - Mombasa Road) to Mbirikani - we chose the old road which basically meant we felt like on a Paris-Dakkar Trophy. So after surviving this, the arrival to Amboseli Sopa Lodge - was like entering the paradise... It is mostly due to its perfect location - outside of Amboseli National Park but with a perfect view of Kilimanjaro. The huts were guests stay are really cosy and nice - although really not luxurious. The staff is extremely friendly and the food is really good. Why to go there? To take a dive in the pool with a great view on Kilimanjaro - unforgettable experience.
