Mwembe Resort
Ranked #14 of 28 Hotels in Malindi
Reviewed 28 July 2011

We spent two weeks in Mwembe Resort as RCI exchange.

Resort is located 1.5 km from the town centre, 900 meters off Lamu Road which is the main street of Malindi. Hotel has free shuttle van transportation from hotel to town at 9, 10, 12, 12, 14 and 16 o'clock and 10 past the same hours back to the hotel. However, this is on request so you must book it either way. Taxi to/from town costs 300 ksh (Kenyan shillings) and tuk-tuk 100 ksh one-way. As this resort is not located on beach this same free hotel shuttle takes you to beach at 10 am and picks up at 16.20 every day, on request.

Resort consists of several buildings, 2-3 apartments in each. Main building has reception open for 24 hours and bar next to it. There are two swimming pools with sunbeds and shades where mattresses and towels are provided free of charge. Quite basic gym with small sauna room and massage room (massage is 1000 ksh an hour) without a/c is located next to outdated tennis court. Entrance gates with massive wooden doors are always kept closed and not even taxis can enter the hotel yard. There are gatekeepers always on duty letting people in/out and informing when taxis have arrived.

Breakfast is served in the bar from 7 am onwards. There are 3 options: fresh fruits and yoghurt for 500 ksh, bacon+eggs+toasts for 600 ksh and Italian cakes for 700 ksh, each including coffee or tea. Variety of snacks like hot dogs, salads (tasted old and gave us stomach pain), sandwiches and omelettes are also served in the bar. Complementary tea and biscuits are served at 16.30 daily. An excellent Italian restaurant Lorenzo is located next to the bar inside the resort area, but is a business of its own. Lunch from 12 to 14 and dinner from 19.30 to 22, highly recommended!

Apartment: We stayed in apartment number 16. It was a two bedroom apartment for 6 people. Major bedroom had a double bed surrounded by mosquito net and a big bathroom accessible from it only. Bathroom had bidet, toilet and bath but no shower. There was a wardrobe with tiny little safety box, 1000 ksh a week. The second bedroom had two single beds that could be moved and put together. Pillows were stone hard and were not replaced however kindly asked. There were mosquito nets on windows (as in all of them) and therefore the beds didn't have any but one net was covering the bedroom entrance door. Bathroom, including toilet+bidet+shower unit, was located in the hall. Hot water boiler is located under the sink and be easily switched off as the switch is next to the light switch covered by waterproof plastic or rubber lid. While taking clothes out of wardrobes be careful not to hurt your back to these windows frames.

Living room had a sleep-in sofa bed covered with mosquito net from the ceiling. There was satellite TV but I never watched it. Kitchen, or kitchenette, was very basic, fridge ridiculously small, making cooking very unappealing, but ok to make a snack occasionally. Dinner table had room and chairs for 4 people only? Do not leave any food not even breadcrumbs on the table as thousands of pharaoh ants will come up immediately. Tap water is salted, but fresh water is sold and installed to a very handy ”hot and cold water dispenser” by reception for only 500 ksh for 20 litres. Windows open dangerously 90 degrees into the rooms.

One very annoying thing: nobody has ever any change!? This leads to a situation where hotel constantly owes you money. Credit card is useless because it is not accepted anywhere and the rare places it is, a 5-6 % commission is added to your bill and the transaction takes a good 10 minutes or so. Sofia, the manager of the resort said use credit card, but even the excursions arranged by the hotel cannot be paid by it.

3 days before our departure, a water pipe broke down in our apartment. We were already in beds, but soon noticed water everywhere on the floors. Obviously all item on the floor were soaking when there was about 2 inches water everywhere. In the middle of the night we had to change apartment. Thanks to Mahad it went quite smoothly. What we did not understand is that no-one from management ever apologized nor asked how we are? During our 2 week stay we felt we were ignored.

All in all, Malindi is a nice place to spend holiday, but you should seriously consider other resorts than Mwembe, as there are options.

I spent a week at Mwembe as a trade through RCI. I was very satisfied overall. The plusses are: a beautiful setting amongst mango trees, cottage was clean and comfortable. The minuses are: taxi or tuktuk were best way to get to town, the resort shuttle didn't run in the evening, and the beaches were a shuttle-ride away. Don't plan on doing much housekeeping in the kitchen, but there are plenty of restaurants in town. For me, the worst part of the resort was the so-called activites person who repeatedly stood us up, never planned any trips for us that we requested, and rudely ignored us upon check-out. Also, the resort was almost totally deserted in January, and the only on-site activity was relaxation.

We stayed at Mwembe for thr first two weeks of our honeymoon, reception/reservations knew this and allocated us a self contained bungalow with large verandah. The accommodation was large , clean, nicely decorated and functional and the setting just perfect. Mwembe is basically and old mango plantation with units dotted here and there in the shade of the trees and in a very quiet location set back from the busy town. Though away from the beach the resort does have access to two private beaches accessible by courtesy bus ( as is the town of Malindi, though tuk tuks are more convenient and very cheap ), the beach facilities are very good but to be honest the resort offered a more quiet and pleasant atmosphere. The onsite restaurant , Lorenzos, was a good convenient alternative to eating out at night. The staff in both hotel and restaurant were all very helpful and friendly. We would not hesitate in recomending the resort to others and will hopefully be back.

We have stayed at Mwembe twice, using it as a base for a Masai Mara safari. It is a great place with lovely staff. It has a heavily Italian feel to it, as has much of Mwembe. The restuarant, Lorenzo's is first class, with high quality food at a reasonable price. The pool is fantastic, clean, quiet, idyllic. The appartments are clean and well kept, but could do with a refresh. You have to be careful in the kitchen area, ants are always around if food is not kept in sealed containers.
For our Safaris, we have used Raziki from Rica Tours, riziki@ricatoursand safaris.com
He has an office in the town, and has given us first class service, at incredible prices. A real gentleman as well.
We would go back to Mwembe tomorrow if we could.

Just spent a very relaxing fortnight at this almost deserted resort. If you do not speak Italian and like some British company to talk to then this is not for you.To be fair the whole of Malindi is like a part of Italy with the first language being Italian. We only met one other couple from the UK there. Mwembe must have the most courteous and pleasant staff working there and makes for a lovely atmosphere.Great service but strangely the excursions were not made known to us.We were lucky to meet Benjamin who works locally at Hotsun safaris 2000 who could not do enough for us at very good prices. He would arrange outings that WE wanted to go on and not always on the tourist list and was full of information and advice. The hotel uses the Rosada beach which was lovely but not cheap! Pool great, bar great,Lorenzos restaurant good but dear. The real downfall was the accommodation with the little houses you stay in needing some attention and in particular the bathrooms with rust in the baths! We had the most fantastic massages at the resort at a ridiculous low price. But the reason we would probably go back is the wonderful warm staff and of course, Benjamin!

Beautifully set in an old mango plantation this is a resort in desperate need of good management and refurbishment. Pretty little cottage, awful little kitchen with scarce amenities - self catering units should at least have a kettle and clean cutlery. Toilets were always broken, the linen was old and not changed regularly. Service extremely slow - but then this is Africa! Nothing to do for the kids except swimming pools. The only highlight here is the wonderful Italian restaurant - and sidestepping falling mangoes!

My 2 adults daughters and I stayed at this resort and found that it was wonderful. The large swimming pool and fountain was great. The room were also very spacious and adequate. The fridge is only a little bar fridge which was abit too small for us. The tuk tuk's come right to the resort which is convenient and cheap. We also enjoyed the afternoon tea and biscuits. We found that watamu beach was nicer and we had some very knowledgeable beach boys which gave us a variety of tours of the area and were very nice. If you would like their contact info I would be willing to give it to you. Overall we were very happy with the resort. Just across the road their is a cool cafe in the trees called roots which is worthwhile checking out. Also if you go further down the road there is a nice village to see.
