My friend and I literally stumbled into the Vasco da Gama Pillar while walking along the beach at low tide. We climbed up a small shelf of rock and were at the site. Immediately we were approached by two plain-clothed fellows telling us we had to buy a ticket since we had already seen the Pillar!
I was understandably skeptical, but we followed the boys to an indeed official ticket booth. For about $6 each, we purchased a ticket that allowed us to visit the Pillar, plus, at our request, we were given until Monday (two days later) to visit the Malindi Museum and the Portugese Church. All three attractions are included in the one ticket.
It is difficult to be in Malindi and not take in the Vasco da Gama Pillar - just because it is there. If you miss visiting it directly, your view of it from other places is about all of the experience of it you will have anyway.
